What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Professor of Nursing position at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University?

The full-time nursing faculty position is dynamic and may be required to teach on ground, online, and/or via hybrid courses, simulation-based learning activities (SBE’s), clinical skills laboratory, and/or in direct clinical care experiences. The person in this position proceeds through the tenure track and non-tenure track promotion process as described in the EU Faculty Handbook. The standard teaching load for all full-time faculty is the equivalent of twenty-four (24) semester hours of credit in a twelve-month covenant. Certain exceptions to the standard load are required in some disciplines, especially in the case of simulation lab and clinical.

  • Teach assigned pre-licensure nursing students, or graduate students as assigned
  • Expected to teach, prepare course materials, be available to meet with students outside of regularly scheduled class time, and provide support and guidance to students.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with the Associate Dean of Nursing with reports of student progress. Any specific student concerns must be communicated prior to the midterm/final evaluations.
  • Creates student assignments for direct patient care, supervises students in the delivery of care, and evaluates student performance per policy Evaluates and provides written feedback to students on a daily, weekly, mid, and final evaluation of clinical progress in the clinical course.
  • Abides by all clinical partnership policies regarding onboarding requirements to meet any regulatory or facility policy.
  • Follows School of Nursing policies regarding the delivery, implementation, and evaluation of teaching per the Faculty & Staff Handbook.
  • Follows all accreditation standards CCNE, SBN and Middle States.
  • Embodies values of caring and compassion, justice and integrity, competence, and affirmation.
  • The position responsibilities for full-time nursing faculty have been depicted as Teaching, Scholarship, and Service based upon the Key Performance Areas identified in the Eastern University Dwight N. Peterson Faculty Handbook, Chapter 4 (EU Faculty Handbook, 2020) and the NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators (2019).

Teaching/Advising Facilitate Learning Nurse educators are responsible for creating an environment in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitates student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes. Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization Nurse educators recognize their responsibility for helping nursing students develop while integrating the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role. Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies Nurse educators use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate student learning in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings, as well as in all domains of learning. Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes

Nurse Educators Are Responsible For Formulating Program Outcomes And Designing Curricula That Reflect Contemporary Healthcare Trends And Prepare Graduates To Function Effectively In The Healthcare Environment. Faculty Should Seek To:

  • Integrate Christian faith and the Christian worldview with teaching, scholarship, and practice
  • Remain current with advances in the discipline(s) of instruction and effectively implement these in the classroom.
  • Teach a full course load as defined in the Dwight N. Peterson Faculty Handbook (2020).
  • Motivate and encourage the students who take their classes, as well as others with whom they come into personal contact.
  • Model life-long learning to students.
  • Demonstrate ability to integrate theory and practice.
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with administrators and committees exercising oversight in a collegial, responsible fashion.

Scholarship/Creative Endeavor Function as a change agent and leader Nurse educators function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice. Pursue Continuous Quality Improvements in the Nurse Educator Role Nurse educators recognize that their role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role is essential. Engage in Scholarship Nurse educators acknowledge that scholarship is an integral component of the faculty role, and that teaching itself is a scholarly activity. Function Within the Educational Environment

Nurse Educators Are Knowledgeable About The Educational Environment Within Which They Practice And Recognize How Political, Institutional, Social, And Economic Forces Impact Their Role:

  • Possess substantial training and experience as a professional in the area of clinical specialty. MSN with a focus on nursing specialty. Clinical certification preferred. Doctorate in nursing or related field preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, customer service orientation, computer literacy (Microsoft Office) and attention to detail are required.
  • Self-evaluate teaching and administrative effectiveness regularly. Seek continuous professional improvement by means of study, continuing education, mentoring, practice and attendance at professional meetings and faculty development programs.
  • Maintain and revise delegated curriculum courses for degree programs once a year and as needed.
  • Participate actively in the scholarly community by contributing to the scholarship through involvement in individual and collaborative research and by sharing the results with colleagues and students through lectures, seminars, publication and the like.

Service Function as a Change Agent and Leader Nurse educators function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice.

Function Within the Educational Environment

Nurse Educators Are Knowledgeable About The Educational Environment Within Which They Practice And Recognize How Political, Institutional, Social, And Economic Forces Impact Their Role In Order To:

  • Provide academic and professional advising to students enrolled in the academic program(s) to which they have been appointed.
  • Assist in the recruitment, admission, orientation and retention of students.
  • Be knowledgeable about services available to students who are experiencing difficulties, and to make referrals when appropriate.
  • Ability to establish priorities, attain goals, and maintain confidential, sensitive information.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Serve on one University-wide Committee.
  • Serve on a minimum of one Department Committee.
  • Attend School of Nursing, University Faculty, and Division meetings.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean.

It is essential that the incumbent exhibits an understanding of and support for the University’s evangelical Christian mission. It is expected that the faculty member’s public expression of faith/faithfulness (see section 4.4.2 for the Faith/Faithfulness Evaluative Category) will be evidenced in the teaching/advising performance category and either scholarship/creative endeavor or service.

The Following Requirements Must Be Completed Annually Throughout Employment:

  • Professional Development Form (PA SBN Requirement) CEU activity
  • Professional Activity Reports - submit to the Associate Dean
  • Clinical agency health requirements and BCLS proficiency
  • PA RN License
  • PA Criminal Background Check
  • Child abuse Clearance
  • Competencies and credentialing that are required by EU and/or clinical agencies partners

Educational and experiential criteria Must possess a valid and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) License in the State of Pennsylvania Master’s Degree from a Board-approved, regionally accredited college or university in Nursing Previous teaching experience in a higher education setting or professional agency. Performance criteria Exhibit level two performance in teaching/advising (see section 4.4.3)
