The Credit Specialist, reporting to the Collections Manager, is responsible for managing the collection of payments from delinquent accounts, providing credit counseling, and ensuring compliance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) regulations. This role requires a commitment to delivering high-quality service to members while maintaining accuracy in all tasks.
Responsibilities
- Understand and adhere to the credit union's policies and procedures, as well as the FDCPA and CFPB regulations.
- Oversee charge-off and delinquency control for all accounts.
- Collect payments on delinquent consumer loans, mortgages, credit cards, and business loans through phone, mail, and in-person interactions as needed.
- Conduct regular follow-ups on accounts to ensure collection efforts are accurate and compliant with policies.
- Maintain accurate records in the collections system and update member loan files accordingly.
- Investigate member accounts for follow-up issues or collection efforts.
- Advise the Collections Manager on accounts that may require charge-off, foreclosure, repossession, or legal action, in line with collection policies.
- Professionally represent the credit union in court as necessary.
- Direct members to loan officers for workout options or refinancing to facilitate loan repayment.
- Provide in-house financial counseling to members identified as potential credit risks and establish repayment plans as needed.
- Refer members to GreenPath for additional financial counseling and debt management plans.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in projects, securing associate engagement at all levels.
- Recommend innovations and identify opportunities for process improvements within the Collections Department.
- Perform other duties as assigned, ensuring accountability and alignment with organizational objectives.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 3 years of experience at a credit union, preferably in collections.
- Knowledge of FDCPA and CFPB regulations and credit union policies.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong multitasking skills and adaptability to changing circumstances.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Maintain stable personal financial affairs.
- Professional appearance, punctuality, and a cooperative demeanor with employees and members.
