JOB DESCRIPTION: Full Time – Direct Care Staff
SUPERVISOR: Residential Staff Supervisor
HOURS: 40 hours or more per week
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt At-Will Position
Direct Care Staff provide care to teens and young adults ages 16 to 21 in the care of Palmetto Place’s Teen Home (Campus B). Direct Care Staff are expected to work in harmony with other shifts to ensure that the emotional and physical needs of our residents are met, to use common sense in situations for which there are few or no precedents and keep the day-to-day operations of the house functioning smoothly.
We encourage our residents and teen/young adult visitors to be responsible for breakfast, lunch and snacks; laundry; bedroom/bathroom cleaning; completing weekly chores; developing the job schedule and activity calendar. We also encourage them to prepare dinners with help from staff and volunteers.
SECOND SHIFT – Full-time (Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.)
Duties include all regular daily activities including but not limited to:
- Household: Prep kitchen/dining room for snack and dinner, clean living areas and outside areas, monitor/dispense medications, provide residents with personal care items.
- Transportation: take residents to school or pick up from school, take residents to appointments and jobs; complete vehicle logs and report any issues to Direct Care Staff Supervisor
- School: Monitor arrival of buses and cabs in the afternoons and ensure that all residents return home, communicate with Direct Care Staff Supervisor or Client Services Manager on residents’ school needs, assist with homework
- Activities: provide guidance to afternoon homework interns and other volunteers, remind residents of planned activities, plan independent living skill activities, other activity duties as needed
- Counseling: be aware of residents’ emotional needs, talk with residents in the afternoons and evenings and communicate needs to case manager
- Communication: Work with DSS staff on placements, discharges, family visits, caseworker visits, etc. Work with CASA/Guardians ad Litem on visits and other needs. Attend staffing meetings with Resident Operations Manager or Client Services Manager. Schedule mentors or other volunteers.
- Reports: Complete shift summaries, residents’ monthly calendars, incident reports and other reports as needed. Enter resident information into the Apricot database system.
- Other duties as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree with 3 years of experience, Associates Degree with 4 years of experience, or minimum of High School Diploma with 5 years of experience in childcare or related experience with at-risk youth.
- Experience working with teens and young adults. Experience with independent living skills.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, bend and stoop to perform essential duties such as moving, stocking, and cleaning. Ability to stand, bend, twist, lift and stoop in the normal course of care of teens and a home.
- Possess a clean and valid South Carolina Driver’s License and have the ability to safely transport youth in a minivan or minibus.
- Ability to prepare meals.
- Must be a team player, communicate effectively, have critical thinking skills, and problem solving skills.
Requirements Prior to Employment:
- Valid South Carolina Driver’s License
- SLED, Fingerprint, DSS Registry, and both SC and National Sex Offender Checks all come back clear
- Complete a drug screen and physical
- CPR and First Aid certification
