  • Starting salary range : $76,196.12 - $121,068.27 annually.
  • Academic training and teaching experience will form the basis for salary computation as determined by placement on the regular salary schedule of the College. A maximum of step 8 at the appropriate salary grade will be awarded to new faculty.     Primary Function

    The Assistant Professor, Nursing (Behavioral Health) is primarily responsible for teaching a variety of courses in the discipline of Nursing. Specifically, these courses include lecture, clinical instruction, and campus lab instruction. Clinical instruction may be assigned to various times of the day on any day of the week (Monday - Sunday), and the assignment may be changed at any time.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Must meet all of the qualifications listed under 1) through 4) :

  • A Master's degree in nursing.
  • Current license or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • One year of professional experience providing direct patient care as a bedside RN within the past five years in Behavioral Health nursing (direct patient care experience as a registered nurse, which includes registered nurse-level clinical teaching experience, in the content / clinical area).
  • Eligible for approval as a Behavioral Health instructor by the California State Board of Nursing.
  • Only coursework completed at, and degrees awarded by, accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered as satisfying the minimum qualifications. Coursework and degrees that are completed outside of the United States are required to have transcripts evaluated (evaluation to U.S. equivalency and a course by course analysis) by an appropriate U.S. credentials evaluation service.     Duties and Responsibilities

    In addition to the teaching responsibilities, other duties and institutional responsibilities include maintaining regular office hours, developing curriculum, program review and planning, developing and assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in department activities and college governance. Related duties include the following :

  • Providing theory and clinical instruction for all levels of Behavioral Health nursing; supervising, counseling, and evaluating students; preparing course outlines, assignments, and examinations.
  • Delivering instruction in accordance with the course objectives and learning outcomes set for the course, including practical skills, methods, theories and techniques.
  • Participating fully as a member on Nursing Education Department committees, departmental activities, events, and College governance.
  • Holding regular office hours and participating in recruitment, community outreach, and retention of students.
  • Acting as a liaison between the College, the students, and the agencies utilized for clinical experience.
  • Developing and managing course curriculum, syllabus materials and lesson plans.
  • Teaching assigned courses and developing and supervising simulations in a manner consistent with the department's standards and with the content cited in the approved curriculum guides; following the instructional policies as outlined in both the College and the Nursing Education Department Faculty Manual.
  • Assisting in the coordination of instruction among part-time faculty in the simulation lab.
  • Remaining current in the subject matter areas and in the techniques of effective instruction through recent clinical experience and professional development.
  • Maintaining current California registered nursing licensure and CPR certification.
  • Complying with clinical requirements for immunizations and orientations determined appropriate by clinical agencies.
  • Developing and maintaining effective industry partnerships.
  • Facilitating part time faculty evaluations, high school articulation, and textbook requirements (with an emphasis on zero-cost textbooks and open education resources).
  • Performing other duties as required.

  • This is a full-time, 10 months per year, tenure-track position. Teaching assignments will include day, evening, and / or weekend classes at the San Marcos campus and / or off-campus locations as part of contract responsibilities, as well as distance education classes.
