Salary/Wage
Initial Placement Hourly Range: $75.00 – $87.09 (instructional); $73.81-$85.81 (non-instructional)

Part-time faculty employees are eligible to elect membership in one of the following retirement plans:

Job Duties
The Counseling department is seeking qualified part-time counselors to teach counseling courses and to provide academic, personal, and career counseling services, including developing educational plans and delivering follow-up services to students. Teaching assignment(s), assigned separately from counseling assignments, may include any of the curriculum approved courses within the discipline of Counseling.

The current need is for a Native American/Alaskan Native Student Success Counselor position (preference shall be given to qualified candidates of American Indian or Alaskan Native Heritage (Federal Indian Preference Act of 1990)). Additional duties for this assignment include:
  • Developing programs and student support services designed to improve student retention and graduation rates for Native American/ Alaskan Native or other disproportionately impacted populations.
  • Collaborating and coordinating with various departments including Associate Student Government and committees throughout the college to increase access, engagement, and celebration of success for Native American/Alaskan Native heritage students.
  • Creating comprehensive counseling services to Native American/Alaskan Native heritage students based on research, such as academic and career counseling, transfer, personal and life transitions.
  • Assisting with researching, obtaining, and/or writing grants.
  • Coordinating activities such as field trips and providing additional programming specific to the Native American/Alaskan Native heritage program.
  • Attending and participating in trainings, summer institutes, and departmental meetings.
  • Collaborating and communicating with the Tribal Liaison, Elder in Residence and other colleges and community in support of Native American/Alaskan Native students.
  • Coordinating the development and leading the Native American/Alaskan Native Advisory group.
  • Providing outreach and recruitment to local communities and tribes.

Minimum Qualifications
Must meet one of the sets of qualifications listed under 1) through 3):
  • A Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in any of the disciplines listed in 1) above AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), pursuant to Title 5, Section 53410.1 of the California Code of Regulations.
  • A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of the qualifications in either 1) or 2) above. You must complete and attach the Application for Equivalency form (www.palomar.edu/hr/equivalency-app/), if you do not possess the specific minimum qualifications as stated above, which includes degrees that have not been awarded at the time of submitting the application.


Only coursework completed at, and degrees awarded by, accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered as satisfying the minimum qualifications. Coursework and degrees that are completed outside of the United States are required to have transcripts evaluated (evaluation to U.S. equivalency and a course by course analysis) by an appropriate U.S. credentials evaluation service. Part-time faculty members are not to exceed a load of 67%.

The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements: live scan/fingerprinting, official transcript(s), TB risk assessment, and employment verification(s). Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see applicable job posting section for details). Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements is mandatory to be eligible for employment. These requirements are in accordance with the following Administrative Procedures and Board Policies: AP 7120, AP 7120a, AP 7125, AP 7126, AP 7127, AP 7330, BP 7330, AP 7336, AP 7337, and BP 7335.
