We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Seasonal Health Technician to provide essential health services at Patronis Elementary school. This flexible, role will support school health teams in ensuring the well-being of students by assisting with health assessments, first aid, and general medical care. The ideal candidate will be responsive, proactive, and ready to step in as needed to support a variety of health needs in a school environment. 

   

Responsibilities: 

  • Following and enforcing school policies and procedures affecting the health, safety and well-being of employees and students in the school health setting
  • Providing medication administration; maintain proper documentation for the administration of medication and provide parent awareness of the need to re-supply medication.
  • Administering minor first aid
  • Performing clean catheterizations 
  • Performing/assisting with blood glucose monitoring 
  • May assist with managing communicable diseases and conditions
  • Notifying PanCare nurse, parent/guardian, and principal of acutely ill or injured students
  • Completing head lice interventions (including detection, parent education and screening for re-admission to school); Efforts will be made to avoid peak medication distribution times which typically occurs during the hours of 10:30am-1:00pm
  • Performing CPR/AED as needed
  • Documentation and data reporting of services provided in clinic according to established policy and procedure
  • Communicating with school health nurse, school personnel or parent/guardian as needed for care of student
  • Assisting in the provision of health screenings of students: hearing, vision, scoliosis, BMI and subsequent follow up referrals as requested
  • Performing specialized medical procedures for students after receiving child specific training and delegation by registered nurse
  • Overseeing inventory and usage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment and informs principal of Health Room needs
  • Complying with confidentiality requirements of the School District of Bay County and PanCare of Florida, Inc.
  • Ensuring that all paperwork generated in clinic will be dispersed following established policy and procedure
  • Performing other related duties as assigned; including but not limited to, those duties referenced in the Provision of Health Services task list provided by the Florida Department of Health
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • First Aid and Emergency Response: Ability to assess and provide immediate care for injuries, illnesses, and medical emergencies (e.g., administering CPR, using an AED, and treating wounds).
  • Medication Administration: Knowledge of proper medication storage, dosage, and administration. Ability to monitor students for side effects or reactions.

  • Knowledge of Health Conditions: Understanding common chronic conditions in children (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies) and being able to develop care plans for students with these conditions.
  • Clear and Compassionate Communication: Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with students, parents, and school staff. Must be able to explain medical conditions and treatments in a way that is understandable to non-medical individuals.
  • Active Listening: Fully understanding student complaints or concerns by listening attentively, without interruption. This ensures the right diagnosis and care are provided.
  • Confidentiality: Maintaining the privacy of students’ health records and any sensitive health-related information in accordance with legal and ethical standards (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Documentation: Accurate and timely documentation of student health issues, treatments, and any relevant medical history.
  • Empathy: Showing compassion and understanding toward students who are feeling unwell, anxious, or in distress. This also includes recognizing emotional and mental health concerns in students and providing initial support or referrals.
  • Calmness Under Pressure: Remaining composed during emergency situations, such as a medical crisis or student behavior issue, and providing clear direction in a calm manner.
  • Problem Solving: Being able to make quick, informed decisions about the care or treatment of students, especially in emergency or high-pressure scenarios.


Education/Experience: 

  • High School Graduate or GED Diploma
  • Must hold current CPR certification (Infant/Child/Adult/AED), as well as completion of First Aid training.
  • Must successfully pass a Level I background screening.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Computer literate and experienced with a variety of business machines (copy, scan, fax, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills and proper phone etiquette required.

 

Additional Requirements:  The School Health Technicians will be supervised by, at a minimum, a Licensed Nurse or other properly credentialed medical professional, and such supervision will be performed according to professional standards as stated in the Florida Nurse Practice Act. 

  

Physical Demands: 

  • Physical Stamina and Mobility: This is essential, as the role demands lifting, carrying, and balancing various items, including patients and equipment, without compromising the technician's ability to perform other tasks.

  • Manual Dexterity and Coordination: Health Technicians must be able to manipulate delicate equipment with precision while performing tasks that require fine motor skills, such as documenting care and preparing medications. Coordination is also crucial in emergency situations, whether it's on uneven terrain or managing equipment.

  • Lifting, Pushing, and Pulling: The job requires frequent lifting and transporting of patients and supplies, which can vary in weight. Being physically capable of handling these tasks without injury is a must.

  • Visual and Auditory Skills: Technicians must be able to read fine print and view details from various distances, as well as hear and process verbal information, alarms, and patient needs—especially in urgent situations.

  • Communication Skills: Given the frequent interaction with patients, their families, and other healthcare staff, clear verbal and written communication is essential. Technicians also need to understand speech quickly and accurately, especially in stressful or emergency situations.

  • Emotional Stability: Working under stress is inevitable, and emotional maturity is critical to maintaining calm and rationality, particularly when dealing with high-pressure or emotionally charged situations.
