If you currently reside outside the project sites listed above, you will be required to travel for extended periods of time and will receive daily per diem reimbursement.

Additional Note:

If you have Heavy Equipment Mechanical Experience, this will increase your pay rate. We are looking for candidates who not only have strong drilling experience but also a background in maintaining and repairing heavy machinery. If you meet both qualifications, well reward you with a higher pay rate for your skills and versatility.

Summary of Position: The Traveling Driller III will lead a drilling team and will operate equipment necessary to install fiber-optic cable, copper cable, coaxial cable, single and three phase power cable and possibly sewer or water facilities safely and efficiently via the HDD trenchless construction method. Must have extensive experience with HDD around utilities in rural and urban areas, experience reading prints and schematics and the ability to train and mentor other team members.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Conducts foreman responsibilities, such as overseeing laborers and/or crew member's work and monitors productivity.

Lead a drilling crew by training and mentoring employees and maintaining a safe environment.

May approve employee timesheets and/or time off requests via our HRIS platform.

Duties / Responsibilities

Horizontal Drilling Operator / Locators are responsible for running a variety of tasks associated with underground construction.

Projects typically operate on a 5-6 days per week schedule.

Workday schedules may be 10 14 hours long, with up to 20 hours of overtime per week.

Occasional travel on the weekends may be required.

Operate drill rigs and drilling equipment with high proficiency.

Maintain daily drilling reports.

Ensure equipment is in safe working condition and conduct routine and preventative maintenance, as needed.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of MSDS, CEUs and JSAs.

Complete well logs, logbook, repair orders, tailgates, and Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.

Promote positive and professional relationships with team members and clients.

Completes other duties and projects, as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities:

Must possess good problem- solving skills and be adaptable.

Ability to develop bore path plan to ensure all utilities located.

Various related equipment operating experience required, such as mini excavator, Vac Truck, plow, etc.

Inspect / maintain job equipment and tools.

Basic Computer Skills- e-mail, photo editing, maintain bore logs, red-line drawings, PDF Prints, Digi-mark Software, and basic Excel.

Will operate heavy equipment and tools associated with construction activities, as needed.

Must maintain and operate equipment per safety and company guidelines.

Operate horizontal directional drill rig (HDD).

Operate excavation equipment (backhoe, trencher, hydro-vac, etc.) as needed.

Always operate and maintain vehicles and equipment safely.

Report vehicle and equipment maintenance requirements to construction manager / PM.

Repair damaged equipment as directed by the project superintendent/Project Manager.

Document deficiencies in safety practices/equipment to business unit lead.

Must be able to communicate with others to convey information effectively.

Maintain positive public relations (interact with the customer/public in a courteous manner).

Walk and confirm bore path, spot utilities.

Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of paperwork.

Ensure there are proper clearances to install the product per standards and company policies.

Record the depth of the tool head as required.

Ensure the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product.

Able to follow and complete tasks assigned by the business unit lead.

Make sure the job site is safe for employees and pedestrians.

Able to read specs and prints.

Education and Experience:

Work Experience: 5 yrs. experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas. Experience working around or with different size Vermeer or Ditch Witch units and various brands of locating equipment, preferred.

Industry Knowledge: 3 yrs. of general knowledge of Utility Construction Procedures, including print reading. In addition, have knowledge of or be familiar with all procedures and associated tools and equipment necessary to install underground utilities in the most effective, safe, and profitable manner. Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling/boring.

Supervisory Experience: 2 yrs

High School graduate or has obtained GED.

Additional Hiring Requirements:

Ability to travel to other sites in and outside the state of Montana.

Company vehicles are provided during your workday, but employees must have reliable transportation to get to/from their first job site.

Must have a cell phone to clock in/out of mobile application.

Must be able to pass a drug screen and criminal background check (offenses will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis).

Must possess a valid drivers license for the state in which you reside and satisfactory results of a Motor Vehicle Report. CDL highly preferred, but not required.

Obtaining and maintaining an interstate DOT Medical Card and meeting all Federal Interstate FMCSA requirements to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle

Verifying your legal right to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA).

Physical Demands:

Ability to work outdoors and to work in all types of outdoor weather.

Ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift as needed.

Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing skilled movement.

Ability to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time -100% of the position is traveling or in the field performing work in various locations.
