Overview: As an Animal Technician, you will play a crucial role in the daily care, well-being, and socialization of animals housed at our animal shelter. You will be responsible for ensuring the physical and emotional health of animals, maintaining cleanliness of kennels and facilities, and assisting with adoption processes to help them find loving homes.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Care:
- Feed, water, and provide general care for animals according to established protocols.
- Monitor and maintain the health and well-being of animals, reporting any concerns to veterinary staff or management.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
Behavioral Enrichment and Socialization:
- Implement behavioral enrichment programs to promote mental stimulation and reduce stress for animals.
- Socialize animals through regular interaction, playtime, and positive reinforcement training.
- Assess and document behavior to assist in adoption matching and behavioral modification plans.
Kennel Maintenance:
- Clean and sanitize kennels, runs, and communal areas following established protocols.
- Maintain a clean and organized environment to ensure the health and comfort of all animals.
Adoption and Placement
- Assist potential adopters in meeting and interacting with dogs and cats.
- Educate adopters on responsible pet ownership, including basic care, training, and behavior management.
- Process adoption paperwork and ensure accurate record-keeping of adoptions and intake.
Facility Support:
- Assist with receiving and processing incoming animals, including intake assessments and vaccinations.
- Coordinate with veterinary staff for medical examinations, treatments, and surgeries as needed.
Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and other departments to ensure effective operation of the shelter.
- Provide support and guidance to volunteers assisting with dog care and socialization.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with dogs in a shelter, veterinary clinic, or similar environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of canine behavior, basic care, and handling techniques.
- Ability to handle and restrain dogs of various sizes and temperaments safely.
- Strong communication skills and ability to interact professionally and compassionately with colleagues, volunteers, and the public.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment.
- Ability to follow instructions and abide by protocols
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry animals and supplies occasionally in excessive of 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions, inclement weather and standing for extended periods.
