Reports to: Safety Director

 

 

 

This role plays a crucial part in equipping tree care professionals with the necessary knowledge and safety practices by conducting trainings, contributing to the overall proficiency and safety culture within our company.

 

Essential Functions of a Safety Trainer

Hands-On Instruction:

  • Providing hands-on instruction and demonstrations to ensure trainees understand proper tree care techniques, including tree removal, and pruning, while emphasizing safety protocols.

Communication Skills:

  • Utilizing effective communication skills to relay technical information clearly, fostering a positive learning environment among trainees. Must be comfortable speaking in a large group setting.

Flexibility for Travel:

  • The candidate should have the ability to travel and be flexible to undertake trips on short notice.

Conducting Training Activities:

  • Deliver training sessions in person or virtually, to impart the knowledge and techniques of tree pruning, tree rigging, machine operations, defensive driving training, vehicle inspections and chemical applications.

Quality Assurance Audits:

  • Ensure the overall quality of work in various settings meets or exceeds expectations by conducting Safe Work Practices (SWP) audits. Communicate and teach company standard processes while auditing for proper work procedures conducted by field personnel.

Tracking New Hire Training:

  • Track the progress of new hire training activities over 30-day periods, ensuring that all projects achieve 100% compliance or greater.

Verification of Skills and Competencies:

  • Confirm that employees possess the required skills and competencies through verification processes.

Equipment-Specific Training:

  • Conduct training sessions specific to equipment operation and certification for operators.

Knowledge Sharing for Productivity:

  • Maximize overall productivity by sharing knowledge on best work practices with the team.

Equipment Familiarization:

  • Educating trainees on the proper use and maintenance of tree care equipment, including tools such as chainsaws, pruners, and safety gear, to optimize efficiency and safety.

Safety Protocols Emphasis:

  • Emphasizing and reinforcing safety protocols and industry best practices to minimize risks and create a culture of safety among tree care professionals.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Conducting assessments to evaluate trainees' proficiency, offering constructive feedback, and implementing continuous improvement strategies to enhance training effectiveness.

Adapting to Industry Trends:

  • Staying informed about advancements in tree care techniques, equipment, and safety standards to continually update and improve training programs.

 

Qualifications to apply as a Safety Trainer

To be considered for the position of Safety Trainer, candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years' experience on tree crews in the utility industry and successful completion of applicable performance reviews.
    • Have experience on removals of Overhangs and rigging.
    • Is proficient identifying qualified tie in points and knots.
    • Has experience driving manual trucks and aerial lift trucks.
    • Excellent leadership skills to handle stressful situations, multitask effectively, and lead tree care crews.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Professional communication skills, both verbal and written, when interacting with the public, customers, and fellow employees.
  • Arboricultural Knowledge:
    • Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques for trimming, pruning, repairing, maintaining, and removing trees near energized conductors.
  • Standards Familiarity:
    • Familiarity with industry standards, such as OSHA guidelines, including the American National Standards for Tree Care Operations (ANSI Z133.1-2017) and Proper Pruning Standards (ANSI A300).
  • Computer Proficiency:
    • Experience with computers, particularly Microsoft Office products.
  • Electrical Circuit & Equipment Knowledge:
    • Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and the ability to read and understand circuit maps.
  • Safety Enforcement:
    • Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices and wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Capability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and up to 30 pounds frequently.
    • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
    • Be able to enter and exit vehicle multiple times per day.
    • Must be able to read, write, and understand both written and verbal job instructions effectively.
    • Must be able to communicate clearly with others and professionally represent Pannell Co.
  • Work Availability:
    • Flexibility to work long hours, overtime during emergencies, holidays, weekends, storm work, and be subject to call-out work.
  • Tool and Equipment Operation:
    • Ability to operate and assist in servicing all required tools and equipment for tree care operations.
  • Driver's License and Certifications:
    • Possession of a valid driver’s license (Minimum Class C) has had that designated class of license for over 3 years and ability to pass pre-employment drug tests and background checks.
  • Certifications and Licenses:
    • Possession of valid First-Aid and CPR cards (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire) and other certifications required by Pannell Co., Local, and state laws.
    • Possesses Certified Tree Care Professional (CTSP) (Or Ability to obtain within 180 days of hire).
    • Commercial Pesticide Applicators License (Or Ability to obtain within 180 days of hire).
    • Possess OSHA 30 General Industry certification (Or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).

 

In summary, the Safety Trainer should have a combination of hands-on experience, leadership abilities, arboricultural knowledge, and knowledge with industry safety standards to effectively train our employees.
