The Middle School Librarian plays a vital role in fostering a love for reading, promoting digital and information literacy, and managing the school library’s resources. This position requires expertise in library science, educational technology, and student engagement to support curriculum goals and enhance student learning.
The Middle School Media & Journalism Teacher is responsible for introducing students to the fundamentals of journalism, media literacy, and digital storytelling. This role includes teaching students about news writing, reporting, interviewing, ethical journalism, and multimedia production. The teacher will guide students in creating school publications, digital media content, and broadcast journalism projects while fostering critical thinking and responsible media consumption.
Library Media Work Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Maintain, organize, and update the school library collection, including books, periodicals, and digital resources
- Develop and implement cataloging and classification systems for easy resource access
- Ensure a welcoming and inclusive library environment for students and staff
- Teach research skills, digital literacy, and responsible internet usage to students
- Assist students and teachers in selecting age-appropriate reading materials
- Plan and implement reading programs, book clubs, and literacy initiatives to encourage student engagement
- Support teachers by providing instructional materials aligned with the curriculum
- Manage digital library resources and online databases
- Teach students and faculty how to effectively use library technology, research tools, and citation guidelines
- Promote ethical use of information, including copyright, fair use, and citation practices
- Work closely with teachers to integrate library resources into lesson plans
- Coordinate author visits, book fairs, and library events
- Encourage parental and community involvement in library programs
- Maintain library records, including circulation, overdue items, and inventory
- Develop and manage the library budget for purchasing books, subscriptions, and technology
- Apply for grants and coordinate funding opportunities to enhance library resources
- Strong knowledge of children’s and young adult literature
- Familiarity with library management systems and research databases
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Ability to foster a love for reading and learning among middle school students
- Knowledge of educational technology and digital literacy practices
Introduction to Media/Journalism Teacher Responsibilities and Expectations:
