Specialist - Attendance Interventionist School Social Worker - Papillion La Vista Community Schools - 2025-26 School Year
Description: As a part of the Learning Community grant this School Social Worker will focus on support and intervention to address chronic absenteeism, and build strong consistent habits with families of students in the PK-3 as a proactive intervention. School Social Workers facilitate prevention, education, intervention, and post-treatment support activities in schools. They strive to promote a working relationship of trust and mutual respect between school and home, and between the schools and other agencies concerned with welfare of students, in order to create situations and find solutions to individual students’ problems which will maximize chances for success in school and in life in general.
Qualifications: Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work
Certification: Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services license eligible Experience: Case management and/or direct service with youth and families Background and knowledge of mental health and substance use.

Reports To: District Mental Health Liaison & Learning Community Grant Coordinator
Responsibilities:
- Dependable and reliable attendance.
- Researches and builds a system of support based on best practices for resources to support families in the area of chronic absenteeism.
- Serves as an advocate for high risk students and families specifically focused on PK-3rd grade.
- Provides professional development to build staff capacity around chronic absenteeism solutions.
- Evaluates impact of efforts through data collection for Learning Community Grant purposes.
- Provide individual, group, and crisis intervention with students as needed. Consults with, facilitates, and participates in team conferences (SAT, MDT, etc.) when family is involved with a community agency or in a high risk or extreme situation.
- Represents the school district and serves as school liaison on committees in the community as assigned, e.g., 1184 teams, Lift Up Sarpy, SCIP, etc.
- Collaborates regarding referred students with administrators, counselors, teachers, school psychologists, the Learning Community Grant team and others knowledgeable with the situations.
- Also makes classroom observations and interviews students, when possible, in order to get an accurate understanding of the situation.
- Makes home visits as needed to the parents/caregivers of students in order to discuss problems and possible solutions with parents/caregivers.
- Brings parents/caregivers and school officials together to discuss solutions which will be mutually beneficial.
- Communicates with the Juvenile Courts regarding students under jurisdiction and facilitates the flow of information between the school and Juvenile Court.
- Assists in preparing truancy information needed by the County Attorney’s office to prosecute violations of the Compulsory Attendance Law.
- Maintains a current list of resources available to students, parents/caregivers, and staff. Assists teachers, counselors, and administrators in planning special programs within the school for students, parents/caregivers/ and the community.
- Provides consultation and educational services for substance use issues to students, parents/caregivers, staff, and the community.
- Conducts individual and family assessments and provides support groups for students as needed.
- Serves on the District Incident Recovery and Response Team. Follows up on child abuse/neglect referrals.
- Coordinates education alternatives for suspended/expelled students. Assists District Homeless Liaison in identification and service delivery to homeless students.
- Other duties as assigned.
