Music & Art Teacher

Role and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Principal, the PSOE Music / Art Teacher is responsible for direct instruction through curriculum implementation, lesson planning, data disaggregation, and classroom management. Additional responsibilities include maintaining compliance with individual student Education Plans, Section 504 Plans, etc. They will ensure operational and functional knowledge of best practices in education, state and federal education law, FERPA and FAPE law, parent relations, behavioral management, documenting and reporting, and process-driven accountability.
The Music / Art Teacher is responsible for teaching music education to pupils in grades K-6 and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music instruction. Helps pupils grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, playing instruments, and listening. They will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art. They will also perform other duties directly related to this job description.
Curriculum Instruction
- Teaches skills in music understanding / appreciation, harmony, explorations in music, and choral music to elementary students.
- Plans / executes a balanced music program and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
- Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
- Maintains care / responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
- Evaluates each student's musical growth, performance, and musical understanding. Assesses each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.
- Knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school.
- Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
- Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting.
- Understand the versatility of acrylic paints : dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, and monoprinting.
- Understand a variety of "masters" techniques.
- Knows and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art.
- Knows the fundamentals and different approaches to drawing media technique.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
- Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
- Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and minimize time required for distribution and collection.
- Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports.
- Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
- Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and the community.
- May sponsor exhibits from outside the school.

Duties are normally performed in a school / classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The Classroom Teacher usually works in standard classrooms, but will frequently be required to complete tasks in in a wide variety of locations within the school campus. The Classroom Teacher works a standard workweek, but additionally may work evenings, weekends, and any additional hours necessary to accommodate activities such as committees, fundraisers, public meetings, and representing the organization at public events.
