SUMMARY: Highly qualified School Counselors are responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that includes preventative and responsive services while fostering academic, career, and social-emotional development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Guidance and Counseling, School Counseling, or related field.
- Valid Michigan Educator’s Certificate in Guidance and Counseling or School Counseling PK-12.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- School counseling experience in a public-school setting.
- Training from a CACREP accredited college or university in School Counseling.
- Specific knowledge and expertise in the areas of counseling theory/practice, career and vocational theory/ practice, exceptional student staffing procedures, and federal, state, local laws.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify student needs and provide direct student services based on data.
- Provide structured presentations to students and families concerning target areas of assessment that define individual strengths and provide resources to help develop academic, social development, and career success.
- Identify and monitor students’ educational, career, and post-secondary goals and customize programs to support those objectives (Career Fairs, Career Field Trips, KAMSC, supporting collaboration with high school).
- Collaborate with families, teachers, administration, support staff, and community agencies to address the varied needs of students.
- Plan, organize, and deliver the School Counseling Program as required by federal, state, and local regulations and procedures.
- Respond to crisis events, both student and school specific, to prevent harm to self or others, to identify unmet needs, and to provide support or resources to necessary support programs and services.
- Facilitate meetings for students and school-based issues and concerns.
- State Testing Coordinator for MSTEP and PSAT.
- Provide counseling services to individuals and small groups that relate to physical, emotional, and educational well-being.
- Use data to develop strategies to positively impact student’s social emotional behavioral health.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports pertaining to Section 504 and academic.
- Maintain professional growth through school-based, district, and other professional development programs.
- Use technology in classroom and/or parent presentations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of personal-social, academic, and career theories and practices
- Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to student education.
- Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in written and oral form, including electronic media, using positive interpersonal skills.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframes.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders
