Position Overview:
Parents Anonymous Inc. is looking to find a passionate candidate to fill their open Community Outreach Advocate role. The Community Outreach Advocate will actively participate in community outreach efforts to raise awareness about the prevention of substance abuse among diverse parents, children, and youth. You will conduct presentations, distribute materials at various community locations including middle and high schools. The Community Outreach Advocate will also attend relevant trainings, engage with coalitions and advocate for community well-being by providing referrals to Parents Anonymous Programs. You will also coordinate transportation for outreach events, maintain documentation and actively participate in social media marketing as set forth by the marketing team.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide Substance prevention materials and presentations to youth and adults throughout the Lancaster area.
- Participate in the SPA 1 (Lancaster) and Los Angeles County-wide coalitions to provide AOD resources to families throughout Los Angeles County.
- Demonstrate and implement knowledge, skills, and abilities utilizing the SAMHSA Prevention Framework on Substance Abuse Prevention.
- Assist in the identification and maintenance of strategic organizational partnerships with providers to address substance abuse prevention in SPA 1 (Lancaster) not limited to schools, community-based organizations, and faith-based entities.
- Assist the Prevention Coordinator in planning Shared Leadership events four times a year to bring awareness to the four primary substances of focus. This includes Methamphetamine, Marijuana, Prescription Opioids, Alcohol, and Fentanyl (new).
- Facilitate evidence-based program Botvin’s Life Skills Training to community agencies, schools, community churches, and youth-based organizations with the assistance of the program coordinator.
- Participate in day-to-day operations of PEP, including the participation in Weekly Individual and Program Supervision Meetings utilizing the Supervision Log with feedback, delineation of strategies, and assigned tasks.
- Assist in Collecting and maintaining accurate and timely data for Monthly and quarterly Contract Reports of Prevention Education Services by keeping up-to-date activity logs and task lists.
- Assist in providing the required data for the Annual Report documenting work plan progress.
- Attend and actively participate in all assigned required meetings, including Coalition and other meetings with community representatives and DPH.
- Attend individual supervision with Program Manager.
- Participate in outreach activities through public event outreach, presentation, and Organization Events by delivering culturally responsive outreach materials to community-based organizations (CBOS), food markets, corner stores, and other outreach activities as assigned by the Program Coordinator or Program Manager.
- Attend and actively participate in Program Team Meetings to ensure the successful completion of all program details.
- Complete and maintain accurate and timely documentation requirements for outreach activities and other program activities as assigned by the Program Coordinator and Program Manager.
- Assist program coordinator in community-based outreach and engagement, including but not limited to collaboration with school districts, local schools, and parent associations who serve ethnically diverse and marginalized populations but also nontraditional partners utilizing innovative strategies.
- Provide advocacy and support for parents and youth and must be willing and able to provide presentations when needed and technical assistance for community partners.
- Participate in trainings and webinars as required.
- Direct diverse Parents, Children, and Youth to Evidence-Based Parents Anonymous Programs.
- Advocate for substance abuse prevention by providing linkage and referral to Evidence-Based Parents Anonymous and other programs.
- Work with the Program Coordinator to plan and report daily and weekly activities on both the SMART Task List and Activity log.
- Complete and maintain accurate and timely documentation as required for all program activities on a daily task list, spreadsheets, data collection system, and monthly reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Social Services or 3-5 years of relevant PEP experience. Must have a high school diploma.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience. Social Services experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Parents Anonymous prefers that you identify as a Peer: A Peer is an individual who is self-identified as having lived experience with the process of recovery from mental illness, substance use disorder, or both, either as a consumer of these services or as the parent or family member of the consumer.
- Fluency in English and Spanish is helpful.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills while working with the community and staff at all levels of management.
- Proficiency in a computer database.
- Organized, detail-oriented the ability to meet deadlines and follow through on work assignments.
- Must have reliable transportation and report to the Lancaster office with occasional visits to Claremont Headquarters and Pomona Office.
- The ability to work additional days as required.
