Job Title: Billing Specialist
Reports To: Director of Billing
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: This position is responsible for the collection of amounts due to the Practice; either by the Patient or Insurance Company. Performs reconciliation of patient accounts and resolves any outstanding items in a timely manner.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Determines patient estimates and notes patient account with this information prior to appointment*
- Prepares clean claims for submission to insurance companies either electronically or by paper*
- Reviews claim denial listing and ensures proper action has been taken to appeal the decision in a timely manner*
- Answers questions from patients, staff, and insurance companies*
- Works with the Front Office to answer any eligibility questions, questions about patient balances, and any other questions they may have regarding billing
- Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints*
- Prepares, reviews, and sends patient statements*
- Evaluates patient’s financial status and establishes budget payment plans while following and reporting on status of delinquent accounts*
- Performs various collection actions including contacting patients by phone, sending collections letters and prepping file for Collections Agency once collections efforts exhausted*
- Processes payments from insurance companies and patients*
- Reviews prior month to reconcile patient accounts and resolves any unallocated payments. *
- Assists Medical Records Specialist in pulling documentation required as part of an insurance company initiated Medical Records Audit *
- Reviews records for clerical errors prior to release*
- Participates in educational activities and attends monthly staff meetings*
- Maintains strictest confidentiality and adheres to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations*
- Travel to any Park Avenue Dermatology location may be necessary upon request
- Assists in keeping common areas clean including kitchen and break room
- Keeps work area clean, tidy, and well-stocked
- Performs other duties as assigned

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Modernizing Medicine.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and three-year related experience and/or training (Dermatology experience preferred); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates and Licenses:
Billing/Coder Certification. (Dermatology preferred)
Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:
· Knowledge of medical billing collection practices
· Knowledge of business office procedures
· Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices a plus
· Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment
· Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner
· Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
· Well-organized and detail-oriented
