Summary: Under the direction and supervision of the Natural Areas Manager, the Natural Areas Intern performs entrylevel professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training. Performs assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. May perform duties such as gathering and organizing data to provide information for departmental special projects or reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists Natural Areas staff with invasive species control, including weeding of garden areas.
- Performs ecological monitoring, including water quality, bird and floristic studies.
- Collects GPS data and prepares reports and maps for project purposes.
- Uses tools, such as hand loppers, saws and brush cutters, to conduct clearing. Including routine horticultural practices such as pruning and trimming trees and shrubs.
- Represents the Park District with volunteers, staff and other agencies.
- Prepares reports, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.
- Performs accurate data entry and some analysis under the guidance of Natural Areas staff.
- Under the supervision of Natural Areas staff, may coordinate work of volunteers to complete restoration tasks.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience: In the process of acquiring a college degree in a related field in progress.
Schedule: 32 hour/week. Ten-week internship during the summer months, with moderate flexibility with start and end dates.
Wage Range: $16.50-$16.50 per hour
Classification: Seasonal, non-exempt
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; reach with hands and arms; use hands to finger, handle or feel; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally life and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
