School Crossing Guard
Hours Needed: 7:30 - 8:15 a.m. and 2:45 - 3:30 p.m.
Purpose Statement
The job of School Crossing Guard is done for the purpose of assisting with the safety of students who are walking to school and assisting with the safe crossing of roadways.
This job reports to the building Principal or designated Assistant Principal.
Essential Functions
- Chooses good times to step into the street to create gaps in traffic for the purpose of providing safe street crossing for students walking to school.
- Recognizes and communicates potentially dangerous traffic situations and hazards in the environment to the Principal or Assistant Principal so that hazards can be addressed.
- Stands in the roadway with STOP paddle raised to shoulder height to show that pedestrians are using the crosswalk.
- Verbally directs children across the street or verbally directs students to not cross the street to ensure safety.
- Wears identifiable safety clothing and school ID badge in order to be highly visible to students and drivers.
- Writes reports, emails, or other written communication as needed to report unsafe conditions, critical incidents, or problems.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include monitoring road traffic and use good judgment to determine best times for students to cross the street.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform safe street crossing procedures.
ABILITY is required to see, hear, walk, stand, talk, turn, and reach overhead with a STOP paddle multiple times a day. Flexibility is required to work with a diverse group of individuals, and display professionalism and courtesy. Agility is required to react and move quickly as needed.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading and guiding students and drivers.
Working Environment
Generally the job requires 50% walking and 50% standing on various surfaces including asphalt, concrete, uneven pavement, dirt, grass, or uneven ground. The job is performed outdoors under differing weather and temperature variations.
