JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Summary:
The Ambulatory Coding Education Specialist position works closely with clinicians, coding and other appropriate leadership and staff to implement and maintain PNHS’s professional/ambulatory clinical documentation and coding quality program. This position will ensure that needs for complete and accurate capture of professional charges and illness burden are met in compliance with coding guidelines and state and federal regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications:
Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination
- Bachelor’s degree in health information management or related area, or equivalent work experience.
- Two to five years professional coding and auditing experience in health care organizations.
- Experience working in a health care setting reading and understanding professional clinic and hospital health records and coding professional services, utilizing ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS.
- Experience and comfort level communicating with and interacting with clinicians.
- Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams.
- Experience presenting information in one-on-one and group settings.
Licensure/ Registration/ Certification
- Certification in any one of the following: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, CCA.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding principals and documentation guidelines for professional/ambulatory setting.
- Knowledge of auditing concepts and principles.
- Basic knowledge of anatomy/disease processes and medical terminology
- Intermediate comprehensive knowledge of applicable ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding, medical terminology or equivalent recent training or education.
- Demonstrated PC skills in Word, Excel, and Microsoft Access.
- Operates telephone, fax machine, photocopier, and data projector.
Preferred Qualifications:
Licensure/ Registration/ Certification
- Teaching Adult Learners Professional Certificate and/or related adult training certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Comprehensive understanding of various adult training methods.
- Demonstrated ability in critical thinking, self-initiative, and self-direction.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate with and gain the trust and confidence of professionals and staff at all levels of the organization, including clinicians and other health care professionals, line staff, executive staff, management legal staff and financial and audit staff.
