JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant
DEPARTMENT Nursing
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Nursing
Duties and Responsibilities
The clinical duties of the Medical Assistant have a multi-purpose function. The Medical Assistant will be cross
trained to perform activities from registration and appointments to administering and documenting
immunization shots. The Medical Assistant will cross-train in all departments, namely Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, and Pediatrics. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Participate in the Pre-visit Planning/Huddle process for PCMH compliance.
- Follows up with lab reports, imagining reports, and patient referrals during pre-visit planning.
- Administers medications, vaccines, urine samples, pregnancy tests, strep tests, etc., as needed.
- Assist with maintaining control logs (assist with the refrigerator temp monitoring, oxygen tank check), AED checks, glucometer check, emergency kit lock check
- Prepares patient for providers appropriately based on presenting diagnosis. (Ex. HTN patients get BP prior to seeing provider; DM patients get finger sticks prior and request patients to remove their shoes prior to seeing physician, vital signs, etc.)
- Responsible for prescription refill line and electronic prescription requests.
- Assist with equipment check and in working order (EKG machine, vital sign machine, etc.)
- Distribution of health educational information and resources to patients.
- Request discharge summaries from all patients discharged from ED, inpatients or outside office visits.
- Ensures quality care is delivered in an efficient and effective manner.
- Identifies and reports, facility needs, housekeeping needs and is responsible for maintaining par levels of supplies
- Assists providers with routine patient care and procedures and ensures that patients receive clinical summaries after visit with provider.
- Communicates with patients identifying barriers to care.
- Responsible for care and collaboration with patient's physician, Nurse Manager about all issues and concerns related to patient's care.
- Ensures customer service standards are continuously demonstrated.
- Improves patients' quality of life through collaboration and follow-up care.
- Ensuring that the patient flow is fluid and constant.
- Ensuring that the supplies are well-stocked in the exam room and the central supply area, which is inventoried at least once a week.
- Medication Reconciliation during each visit
- Performs screening questionnaires when designated:
- TB
- hearing
- lead
- vision
- cholesterol screening
- PHQ2 and PHQ9
- Performs clerical duties as assigned, which includes the
- completing and routing referrals to managed care, when appropriate,
- making appointments or registering patients,
- sending out abnormal lab letters after ordering the charts and
- having the providers review the charts for follow-up.
- No Show letters and all other duties specific to each department.
- Protect patient confidentiality.
- Strictly follows OSHA guidelines in assigned departments and when performing skills.
In addition to the mentioned duties, when assigned to the appointment desk, they will perform tasks related to a "Clinical Office Assistant." These duties will include:
- Adhering to the provider template for scheduling appointments
- Actually, booking appointments for call-ins and walk-ins as needed
- Alerting the Nurse Manager or Director of Nursing of any scheduling problems or concerns while maintaining communication between the front and back triage area
- Enters all pertinent changes and information into the registration and appointment systems
- And maintains a professional, personable demeanor toward patients and co-workers
Laboratory Duties:
Laboratory duties and responsibilities will include the following:
- Collecting blood specimen (capillary, venous finger and heal sticks), reading hematocrits, administering and reading tuberculin tests, testing urine, performing stains and culture tests with slides, performing EKG's when applicable, recording test and related forms.
- The Medical Assistant is also expected to maintain orderliness and cleanliness of all work areas, to include maintaining inventory of stocks for lab use and monthly maintenance of the autoclave
- Responsible for the logging of specimen flow in and out of the lab
- Handles and processes urine's, specific to the diagnostic tests.
- Is expected to tract all anemia's, Paps, and leads, abnormal labs result via EMR-Link

All patient information is held confidential to protect PWHS from liability.
Working Conditions:
Works in a normal office environment where there is no physical discomfort due to dust, dirt, notice and the like.
Work attire: Clinical attire per personal policy
In addition to the mentioned duties and responsibilities, the Medical Assistant is expected to comply with all other duties assigned
Qualifications
Education / Training:
Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program
Prefer Certified Medical Assistant
Skills / Experience:
Prefer 1 — 3 years of Medical Assistant work experience, with the ability to perform phlebotomy procedures
