Position Summary
The primary duty of this non-exempt, non-benefited, engineering intern position will be to support water resource projects within the Engineering Department. This position is designed to provide practical experience in water resource management, water well drilling and other engineering projects, and environmental sustainability. The intern will work closely with professional engineers and multi-disciplinary teams to assist in the planning, design, and implementation of water conservation initiatives, system upgrades, and various water resource projects.
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Water Resource Manager, and/or Project Managers.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Data Collection, Analysis and Reporting:
Help collect data related to water usage, consumption patterns, water quality and system performance. Analyze and report findings to support ongoing water management efforts, including conservation strategies and water supply planning.
- Planning Support:
Assists District staff with various tasks in support of the long-range planning initiatives, including document management, preparation of meeting materials, organizing internal and external data and information. - Field Work:
Participate in field surveys and site visits to observe, collect data, and assist with system inspections. Provide technical support for field teams working on water resource or system projects. - Construction Management:
Supports District staff in monitoring construction projects, including inspections of water well drilling sites and recording construction progress and expenditures. Provides input into construction projects, including review of submittals, specifications, pay applications, change orders, and cost estimates. - Efficiency Initiatives:
Assist in the development and implementation of sustainable water conservation initiatives. This could include helping with public education programs, promoting efficient water use, developing water budgets, and evaluating current water-saving technologies. - Coordination:
Meets and coordinates with District operations staff, consultants, contractors, government agencies, and utilities companies. Assists District Staff in meeting preparation for stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Technical Skills:
- Basic computer knowledge including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and familiarity with engineering design software.
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles, practices, methods, and standards.
- Ability to interpret and use information from engineering reports, plans, specifications, regulations, and technical documentation.
- The ability to obtain and utilize information to prepare written documents that are clear, concise, courteous, and within accepted grammatical standards.
- Communication Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to produce clear, well-organized reports and documentation.
- Attention to Detail:
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail when working with data, reports, and designs. - Teamwork and Collaboration:
Ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative environment with supervisors, co-workers, consultants, vendors, contractors, developers, and the public. - Field Experience:
Comfortable working outdoors in various environmental conditions.
Qualifications
- Education:
Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, geology, biology, natural resource management, or related field. - Must possess a valid Driver’s license and a Motor Vehicle Record within the acceptable limits of the district’s insurance company.
Working Conditions/Physical Activities
- Monday through Friday, up to 40 hours per week.
- Work is performed primarily in an office setting; however, may be performed on construction sites where there may be exposure to dust, noise, traffic and moving construction equipment; and/or at water/wastewater treatment facilities where noise, irritants, dust, dirt, bacteria, hazardous chemicals/air/materials and fumes are present.
- Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and over all types of terrain. May be exposed to risks typically associated with working around water, chemicals, electricity and other man-made and natural hazards.
- Full range of body movements including stooping, twisting, kneeling, bending, leaning, reaching, climbing (heights), stretching and working in awkward positions. May stand for extended periods of time. Occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs.).
- Vision is needed for reading, computer input, recording, and interpreting information such as blueprints and plans; speech and hearing are used to communicate with other employees over the telephone, radio and in person. Work on computers and associated equipment for prolonged periods of time.
