YMCA Summer Camp Counselor

OUR MISSION:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The summer camp counselor is responsible for the care, implementation of daily activities and safety of children enrolled in summer camp. This person must model appropriate behavior for campers, such as respect for others, willingness to try new things with an open mind and setting boundaries. A counselor must be able to work independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to prioritize and accomplish tasks. This person will be expected to be punctual, communicate effectively, and manage time and task successfully. A successful candidate in this position will find an appropriate balance between accountability, safety, and fun.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Experience -Must be at least 18 years of age and have a minimum of (1) year of relevant work experience. Must have a high school diploma or GED.

Language Skills- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general procedures and licensing regulations. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The Summer Camp Counselor will have to posses a certification in:

• Praesidium Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting Awareness
• CPR, First-Aid, and AED
• Food Handlers

The Summer Camp Counselor must also:

• Provide proof of being free of tuberculosis prior to employment
• Complete a background and criminal record check through WV CARES and WV-DHHR

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Promote and incorporate the YMCA core values and character development when dealing with members, program participants, partners, and staff.
• Provide care and supervision for elementary school-aged children.
• Implement planned curriculum in an effort to meet the needs of individual children with concern for their interests, abilities, talents and individual style and pace of learning.
• Participate in staff meetings & training programs for professional growth.
• Assist parents as needed and encourage parent involvement.
• Respond to parent and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
• Enforce effective behavioral management techniques and apply accountability.
• Practice the core competencies of early childhood educators as noted in Appendix 78-1A of the WV State Day Care Licensing Regulations.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
