Your New Role
This seasonal, full-time Park Ranger 1 position is expected to last at least 9 months. In this position you will perform a variety of tasks to protect and maintain state park lands, resources, structures, facilities, and systems. This includes using skills in building trades like carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized tasks such as resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility operation, and park rule enforcement, all within the Carl G. Washburne Management Unit.
Located north of Florence in the Siuslaw National Forest, Washburne's creekside campground is just north of Heceta Head and about 10 miles south of Cape Perpetua. The campground is located on the east side of Highway 101, with a buffer of native plants and trees between its spacious, shady sites and the highway.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
OR
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field; AND Six (6) months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.
Desired Attributes:
  • Experience and knowledge of basic park resource and facility operations and maintenance and/or resource interpretation.
  • Skilled in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Skilled in using computer and experience with cash handling, making change and preparing simple cash reconciliation reports.
  • Experience with park rule enforcement, resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping and park rule interpretation.
  • Experience with the safe use of tools, materials and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.
  • Skilled in performing basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds-keeping tasks.
  • Experience with practices relating to conservation, preservation and protection of significant natural or scenic resources.
