Based on our internal equity review process, the starting hourly wage for this position will be $25.51.  
The full-salary range for this position is $25.51 - $31.74 per hour.

The Parks Tacoma’s Community and Neighborhood Parks Maintenance and Operations team is currently hiring for several positions. This team is built from motivated professionals guided by caring and dedicated leadership. The campus contains fifty plus Neighborhood, Community, and Signature parks spread across the city of Tacoma.  Currently the team is seeking a:

  • A laborer position to be responsible for the solid waste collection.  The incumbent will be responsible to operate a large (non-CDL required) refuse truck to provide daily solid waste removal.  The five 8-hour shifts would be consistently early (4AM) and may cover one day on the weekend in the peak season.  Our team and park patrons rely heavily on this piece of our operations, so it is one of the most important functions of our team.

  • General laborers to support the grounds, facilities, and assets.   These positions offer a unique variety of tasks and lend an opportunity to hone and expand your knowledge and skills.  Our teams are divided by territory and are made up of a nice blend of job positions and responsibilities to balance the workload.  While routine maintenance is priority to us, there are several opportunities throughout the seasons to team up and perform major projects.  The work occurs in the outside environment and shift schedules are mostly very consistent.  Our staff finds motivation and are inspired from the instant gratification that comes from performing top notch landscaping, park and facility maintenance for the citizens of Tacoma and neighboring cities to enjoy.  This team really desires a well-rounded Laborer with the attitude and aptitude to perform all of the tasks in the job description at a high level.

Position Information 
Under the direction of an assigned maintenance lead or supervisor, perform a variety of assigned duties within facility maintenance and/or park maintenance. This position may also provide work direction to seasonal staff and volunteers.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
  • Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.

Perform custodial and cleanup functions as required; clean restrooms, toilets, sinks, mirrors and walls.

Sweep, mop, and clean floors; vacuum carpets and rugs. Perform annual deep cleaning and floor resurfacing.

Mow, rake, edge, weed, fertilize and water lawns, athletic fields, landscape beds and any assigned park landscape and grounds areas.

Plant, fertilize, water, trim and prune shrubs, trees and flowers as assigned.

Sweep and blow leaves, snow and debris from walks and driveways; gather and remove trash from grounds.

Prepare rooms or facilities for special functions; move furniture, small bleachers, equipment and other objects as required.

Operate all types of cleaning equipment, forklift, highlift or other specialized equipment.

Operate Park District vehicles as assigned; learn the safe operation of equipment, such riding mowers, hand mowers, turf equipment and trucks.

Assist in general maintenance, repair, and construction work in the various maintenance trades, including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC and painting.

Assist skilled maintenance personnel in the construction, installation, and maintenance of furniture, fences, playground equipment, cabinets, and shelving.

Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of utilities like gas, water, electrical lines.

Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Washington driver's license.
• Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency within probationary period.
• Ability to obtain and maintain job specific training, license and certification as required.

ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Noise from equipment operation.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Standing and walking for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist. Pushing and pulling maintenance supplies and equipment Lifting and moving furniture and objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools and equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Heavy physical labor.

HAZARDS:
Working at heights on ladders or scaffolding. Working with and around machinery having moving parts .Exposure to fertilizer fumes, pollen and dust. Fumes from vehicle and equipment operation. Chemical fumes

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
• Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
• Methods, equipment and materials used in building and grounds maintenance care.
• Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
• Basic materials, equipment and terminology used in the maintenance trades.

ABILITY TO:
• Learn procedures, methods and schedules.
• Communicate effectively with internal and external customers providing quality customer service
• Use tools and equipment common to the maintenance trade.
• Maintain Park District facilities and parks in a clean, safe and secure condition.
• Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
• Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding.
• Assist others in specialized grounds keeping activities.
• Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.
• Assist other maintenance personnel in the maintenance and repair of Park District buildings and facilities and grounds.
• Perform general maintenance and repair on District furniture, buildings, fixtures and facilities.
• Learn safe operation of a wide variety of power equipment related to the janitorial, building trades and grounds maintenance work.
• Interpret rules and regulations.
• Perform emergency first aid and CPR as needed and according to established guidelines.
• Communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
• Assess and evaluate situations effectively.
• Exert optimal effort in successfully completing tasks.
• Take initiative with minimal supervision.
• Extract and record data and carry out calculations accurately.
• Set up and operate equipment that can require selection from options or different settings.
• Manage time efficiently and effectively through scheduling and prioritizing.
• Work within and contribute to the effectiveness of a team, respecting differences.
• Maintain work schedule obligations & report for work regularly and on time.
