Primary Purpose

Manage a productive, organic fruit and vegetable garden at Maunaloa Elementary School while providing support to students, teachers and community members as they utilize the garden to accomplish learning objectives and engage community participation.

Essential Duties

  • Maintain the school garden which may include but is not limited to weeding, planting, harvesting, watering, pest management, compost maintenance and fruit tree care;
  • Create a planting plan of crop rotation with planting and harvest logs’
  • Create garden signage to identify different plants and crops;
  • Participate in the implementation of garden related teacher activities to align with in-class learning objectives;
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with school, student, family and community to meet the critical need of engagement and learning. This could include encouraging parent volunteers and stakeholder garden visits;
  • Collect required data and coordinate the timely submission of reports;
  • Assist teachers in the assessment of student learning;
  • Attend school garden related workshops and professional development as available;
  • Create a garden work plan, including harvest schedule for the next 5 years;
  • Participate in meetings related to the school garden and student/family/community engagement.

Work Hours

  • 24 hours per week between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays, or as otherwise determined by the supervisor;
  • Position requires regular and predictable attendance;
  • Some events on evenings or weekends at various times.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor garden setting;
  • Travel in personal vehicle to and from sites;
  • Travel to the neighbor islands may be required;
  • Travel to the U.S. continent may be required.

Equipment Use

Personal vehicle, gas powered equipment ,light farm/garden equipment, computer and/or laptop, printer, work cell phone.

Mental:

Physical:

  • Requires lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds on a regular basis;
  • Must be able to stand, sit, bend and work outdoors in a garden setting.

Communication:

  • Must exhibit courteous and professional demeanor towards program participants, staff and administration via verbal, written, physical, and electronic correspondence;
  • Requires good oral and written communication skills;
  • Must be able to communicate with various stakeholders and facilitate diverse and difficult conversations and meetings;
  • Must feel comfortable participating in outdoor classroom activities with students and teaching garden techniques in front of large audiences;
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in education or related field OR at least three (3) years of experience in garden/landscape maintenance, crop rotation and harvest implementation, public health, and/or community/youth development.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer software applications such as Zoom, Word, Excel and Google Suite;
  • Must have access to a vehicle, have a valid driver's license, a safe and responsible driving record, and current no-fault auto insurance, with at least the $100K in bodily collision per person and $25K in property damage liability.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience in coordinating comprehensive program activities in a school or farm/garden setting;
  • Project management experience including the ability to create, communicate, maintain and align detailed work plans.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the Hawai‘i DOE public school system AND the respective community;
  • Experience in collaborative leadership practices, including co-designing action plans or strategies with other stakeholders.
