Essential Job Functions
Installs, maintains, rebuilds, and replaces locks, door closers, tumblers, panic devices, and related hardware within the County facilities, including the County Detention Center. Disassembles locks and repairs worn tumblers, springs, and other parts; makes and installs new parts as required. Rekeys locks and other hardware, cuts new or duplicate keys manually or by use of a code machine. Changes safe combinations, installs new safes and repairs defective safes. Inspects locks and determines defects and needed repairs; applies solvents and lubricants when necessary. Opens locked doors, file cabinets, drawers, and related items for which there is no key using tools of the locksmith trade; may be required to open combination safes by listening to lock sounds or by drilling. Answers emergency security and lock calls for building or room access during hours and after hours as needed. Reads and interprets blueprints, hardware schedules, and specifications for plan reviews. Conducts warranty and quality control inspections on new and existing buildings related to locks and hardware to ensure the appropriate products, craftsmanship, and records are being provided. Maintains records for master keying systems and key control and records time and materials used in computerized maintenance management systems. Determines supply stock needs and places reorders. Lifts heavy objects on a routine basis. Performs minor carpentry work as needed. Applies knowledge of standards and procedures of the locksmith trade and safety requirements in performance of job duties. Observes safety precautions; properly cares for tools and materials of the trade. May be required to service electric locks and hydraulic door closers. Surveys facility needs as they pertain to master key systems. Develops master key systems, bitting list, and other key codes manually or by use of specialized computer software. Trains other team members in the trade. Performs related work as required. Must be able to push and lift up to 50 lbs. Position is not limited to the shop; field work as well as other assignments may be required as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Highly knowledgeable of standard practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in locksmith trade and electronic access system.
- Knowledgeable in high-security institutional lock systems (mogul, paracentric, disc detainer, tubular, etc.).
- Knowledgeable in maintaining master key code systems, including records and documentation of issued keys.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches or blueprints.
- Skill in the use of locksmith tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work based on changing needs of the departments to be serviced.
- Ability to use computer and software to log work documentation, hours, materials, parts and work order completion.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and adheres to necessary safety precautions.
- Ability to research and order materials as necessary for locksmithing services.
- Must be able to push and lift up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Requirements
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Must be able to kneel, bend, stoop, and climb. Must be able to push and lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalency and five (5) years' of progressively responsible experience as a locksmith.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license. Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL) credential with ALOA preferred. Additional locksmith vocational training, manufacturer training, and/or access control manufacturer certifications are preferred.
