What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Advocate position at Passages, Inc.?
Passages, a non-profit service agency, provides direct and supportive services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault; provides community information and education concerning issues relating to domestic violence and sexual assault. Passages operates a 20-bed shelter for victims of abuse and their children, and a low-income housing apartment complex. Passages also maintains a 24-hour crisis and referral phone service.
This position is responsible for direct in-house client needs delivered to clients and residents of the Passages’ domestic violence/sexual assault shelter. This position is directly supervised by the Program Manager This position must understand and support the mission of Passages, Inc., and be committed to maintaining the agency’s confidentiality policy. This person must be able to handle multiple, multi-faceted and detailed responsibilities, maintain a positive attitude and have the ability to work as a team player as well as independently. The positions available are primarily for 2p-10p and 10p-6a,
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Ability to work with diverse populations. LGBTQ familiar or willingness to learn.
3. Knowledge of issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault/abuse and the ability to assist victims as they heal. Trauma-informed experience.
4. Must participate in relevant training/webinars on a regular basis.
5. Demonstrate respect and a non-judgmental attitude to all constituents, both internal and external.
6. Maintain 100% confidentiality of clients.
7. Ability to work under stressful situations.
8. Ability to work as a team member, yet work independently.
9. High level of interpersonal skills.
10. Respond to all in-house client needs, including being available to listen and explore options, assistance in meeting physical needs.
11. Complete in-take information when client enters shelter during your shift, and complete in full Client Contact forms for each interaction you have with client both in person and on the phone.
12. Respond to crisis line calls and complete client contact forms for each call.
13. Document all client services, both phone and in-person, provided overnight and on weekends.
14. Assure shelter safety and cleanliness as described on the “duties list” posted on the advocate/volunteer desk.
15. Report any emergencies to the Program Manager or Executive Director.
16. Attend all staff meetings unless supervisor waives attendance.
17. Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist other team members.
18. Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager Executive Director.
