JOB DESCRIPTION

T ITLE : Athletic Trainer

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Hold a current National Athletic Trainer's Associations Board of Certification.
  • Hold an Athletic Training Licensure from the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Hold an Athletic Training Certificate from the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Hold a current CPR / First Aid Certificate
  • Knowledge of sports injuries and sports medicine practice required.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and competence on the safe and effective care and operation (including the medical equipment's capabilities, limitations, special applications, emergency procedures for failures, maintenance and user error) of the department specific equipment (both current and new).
  • Work experience in working with student-athletes, coaches, and administrators.
  • Management and communication skills.
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal registered alien status.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBLITIES :

  • Perform the role of a certified athletic trainer as defined by the National Athletic Trainer's Association and as regulated by the New Jersey Administrative Code (N.J.A.C.)
  • Provide Athlete Care in the following manner :
  • Act as a liaison between coaches, students, parents, and physician.
  • Provide consultation / resources for treatment of athletes.
  • Responsible to provide home exercise protocols for athletes per doctor request.
  • Responsible for following all HIPAA regulations and guidelines.
  • Responsible for following all OSHA guideline while handling blood or bodily fluids.
  • Ensure each student-athletes is in compliance with the physical examination criteria required for participation by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • The licensed athletic trainer may at the discretion of a licensed physician, administer the following treatments : cold, heat, light, sound, electricity, electromagnetic waves, hydrotherapy and traditional mobilization techniques, rehabilitation exercise programs, traction, and massage.
  • The licensed athletic trainer may at the discretion of a licensed physician as provided in N.J.A.C., provide testing of neuromotor and musculoskeletal functional capacity for the purposes of conditioning, reconditioning, or otherwise evaluating the athlete's performance capability.
  • Responsible for applying protective taping, wraps, and bracing as well as crutch fitting and product education when necessary.
  • Make appropriate medical referrals when indicated and provide counseling to athletes and parents seeking proper medical assistance and follow up.
  • Develop and maintain the necessary emergency action plan protocols for all sports.
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the school nurse and other health care professionals within the school district.
  • Work with the other athletic trainer(s) to ensure the appropriate health care coverage for all home athletic events, whenever possible.
  • Attend all varsity football contests, home or away.
  • Work with the other athletic trainer(s) to ensure the appropriate health care coverage for home practices and events including Saturdays and school holidays.
  • Assist the placing orders for athletic training supplies.
  • Be available to assist injured athletes.
  • Maintain and daily log of training room activities and records of treatment.
  • Maintain detailed records of therapy programs.
  • File insurance claims and other required reports in a timely fashion.
  • Understand and communicate developments in the field of health care for athletes through the reading of professional journals, participation in professional development and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Advise, immediately, appropriate school of any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, or child neglect, severe medical conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under to the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
  • Advocate a healthy and responsible life style by promoting the concepts of the effects of substances, total physical fitness and healthy habits for lifetime of vigorous living.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel and outside agencies associated with the school.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information in accordance with HIPPS regulations.
  • Assist the team physician in the conduction of pre-participation physicals.
  • Maintain a detailed spreadsheet of pre-participation physical examinations.
  • Administer concussion education program and appropriate concussion neurocognitive testing.
  • Perform hydration testing as per guideline from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Guidelines.
  • Assist Athletic Department in ensuring coaches, staff and facilities are compliant with Janet's Law
  • Provide and assist coaches with preventive programs as needed, including :
  • Physical conditioning (in conjunction with the strength and conditioning coach)
  • Environmental safety and physical hazards (this would include field examination, lighting safety and environmental conditionings
  • Equipment safety
  • Athletic Training and counseling
  • Ensure that each coach is aware of the athletes who are in compliance with the physical examination criteria of the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association
  • Ensure that each coach is aware of the emergency actions plans of their perspective sport.
  • Provide athletic injury management, including :
  • Injury recognition
  • Functional capacity evaluation
  • Acute injury care
  • Proper referral for injuries requiring referral to another medical facility or professional
  • Supervise injury rehabilitation and reconditioning under the orders of the team physician
  • Professional Development :
  • Remain up to date with all necessary certifications and licenses
  • Remain up to date with current evaluation skills, techniques and knowledge
  • Remain up to date with current human anatomy, physiology and research
  • Remain up to date with current biomechanical research
  • Remain up to date with current nutritional and pharmaceutical trends.
  • Remain up to date athletic training, therapeutic exercise and modality trends.
  • Participate actively in clinical affairs to enhance the status of practice
  • Develop professional competence through participation in continuing education
  • Adhere to New Jersey school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and regulations, and contractual obligations.
  • Perform all other duties as required by law, code, or Board policy.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the Superintendent or his designee may assign from time to time and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulations.
  • TER MS OF EMPLOYMENT :

  • Twelve (12) months.
  • Contract terms, salary, and benefits as established by the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Conditions established by laws and codes of New Jersey; and policies, rules, and regulations established by the Passaic Board of Education.
  • Tenurable.
