What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Student Engagement for Athletics and Recreation position at Passaic County Community College?
We are seeking a Director of Student Engagement for Athletics and Recreation who will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement within the Center for Student Engagement. The Director will be responsible for directing the development and administration of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III intercollegiate athletic competition and student recreation. The Director ensures delivery of a comprehensive athletics and recreation program that demonstrates a commitment to student success through scholar athlete excellence, intramurals, physical fitness, and eSports. This position requires the ability to work some evenings and weekends as assigned.
Current intercollegiate sports include Men's Volleyball, Women's Volleyball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball. The Director is responsible for exploring viable and sustainable intercollegiate sport opportunities to advance student engagement.
Example of Duties:
- Provide strategic vision and administrative direction for the daily operations of intercollegiate athletic competition and student recreation.
- Assist with inquiries from faculty, staff, students, and community members related to all athletics and recreation processes and operations.
- Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate a comprehensive athletics and recreation program for the ever-evolving community college student.
- Review, coordinate and approve all intercollegiate athletic activities and provide training and support for coaching staff.
- Identify vendors and negotiate the best possible contract for athletic and recreation related events/programming under the guidance of the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement.
- Assist the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement with all fiscal planning and management for student engagement, including operations and personnel matters.
- Prepare and manage the annual athletics and recreation budget.
- Serve as a general advisor to special populations such as student-athletes and team managers and make referrals to academic advisors or other College personnel as appropriate.
- Serve as the administrative advisor for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee/Club (SAAC).
- Manage operations and staffing for the Paterson Fitness Center and support Wanaque staff with operations and staffing for the Wanaque Fitness Center.
- Collaborate with admissions/enrollment services on planning and facilitation of student athlete recruitment and orientation events.
- Maintains professional relationship with media sources for the purpose of providing schedules, postponements, cancellations, sporting event statistics, records, and/or other relevant information.
- Serve as an active member of the Passaic County Coaches Association (PCCA) for recruiting and programming purposes.
- Assure institutional compliance with policies and procedures as outlined in the NJCAA Compliance Manual; oversee the NJCAA eligibility and compliance processes including, but not limited to, organizing, and maintaining all compliance paperwork and submitting eligibility in accordance with NJCAA by-laws.
- Explore external funding opportunities to supplement institutional funding of Athletics & Recreation initiatives and programs. Collaborate with the PCCC Foundation to identify and communicate with potential donors.
- Understand and articulate transfer requirements and eligibility considerations for student-athletes seeking to further their academic and athletic careers at bachelor’s-degree granting institutions.
- Explore and propose the establishment of additional intercollegiate and club athletic teams to meet the needs of the PCCC community.
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of Student Engagement for Programming & Activities to provide activities, programs, and support for PCCC students.
- Supervise Center for Student Engagement part time staff.
- Support Commencement activities in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs.
- Monitor, analyze and evaluate current scope of services offered in the Center for Student Engagement.
- Plan, implement and direct new student programming under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and in coordination with other divisional and college-wide efforts.
- Work to promote the model of one campus, three locations as it relates to the student engagement experience.
- Serve as Student Engagement representative for division-wide and college-wide initiatives.
- Participates in professional organizations and collaborates with state affinity groups and regional organizations to pursue and enhance student development and enrollment initiatives.
- Serve as an active member of NJCAA Region 19 and seek appropriate leadership opportunities.
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in athletic administration, physical education, student development, student personnel services, education, or related field. (Required)
- At least three years of progressive leadership and administrative work experience in student activities. (Required)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. (Required)
- Demonstrated proficiency with student information systems and Microsoft Office 365 applications. (Required)
- Knowledge and experience in student development theories, budgets, and program development. (Required)
- Prior work experience in higher education, preferably at a community college. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in using varied social media platforms in a professional manner. (Preferred)
- Bilingual. (Preferred)
