The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking Operations Supervisors. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5
largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.6 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd.
Position Summary : The Boiler Operations Supervisor I is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the boilers and auxiliary equipment used in the biosolids treatment process and / or for building heat. Responsibilities will include assisting the Chief Boiler Engineer with the supervision of all boiler operations staff, ensuring the proper operation of all equipment, and detecting and resolving any issues that arise. Additionally, the Boiler Operations Supervisor I will establish and monitor work schedules to meet operational needs, as well as direct all activities critical to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. Must be available 24 / 7 / 365 as questions and issues arise.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Must be computer literate and able to plan, organize, execute and coordinate a computerized maintenance management program. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position, and be able to understand and carry out verbal and written directions. Must have an understanding of all applicable regulations, including N.J.A.C. 12 : 90, Boiler, Pressure Vessel, and Refrigeration Rules, NFPA, ASME, NBIC Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) specifications, and industry accepted engineering safety practices.
Experience and License Requirements : A valid New Jersey Driver’s License. A minimum of a New Jersey Red Seal Boiler License is required. A New Jersey Gold Seal Boiler License is preferred and must be actively pursued within six (6) months of taking the position and obtained within 24 months of taking the position. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in boiler operations is required.
Education : High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
Physical Demands : Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others is maintained. To perform the essential functions of this position the employee must be able to : sit, stand, walk, stoop, climb (including ladders), kneel, lift up to 50 lbs., carry, reach, push, pull, use a keyboard, minor use of tools, manual dexterity, hearing and visual acuity. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into Confined Spaces while wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks, as well as Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
Working Conditions : Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and required to work indoors and outdoors.
