The laboratory support specialist provides administrative and laboratory support to the pathologists and acts as a liaison between physician offices, hospital staff, and SEPA.

The laboratory support specialist provides administrative and laboratory support to the pathologists and acts as a liaison between physician offices, hospital staff, and SEPA.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide clerical support for Pathologists and other SEPA employees
- Answer phones
- Assist all hospital personnel with pathology inquiries
- Review HIS for patient information such as history, physical, insurance, radiology reports, etc.
- Review LIS for any previous procedure information
- Setup and assist with bone marrows, FNA procedures, and frozen section procedures (as needed)
- Coordinate with SGHS scheduling department to schedule ultrasounds
- Coordinate pathologists’ and nurses’ schedules for procedure times
- Communicate with requesting physician’s office the date and time of procedures and send out patient packets
- Assist with creation and maintenance of monthly calendar of pathologists’ work schedules and time off
- Maintain an Excel spreadsheet of all bone marrows, skin biopsies and FNA procedures for daily, monthly, or yearly review
- Filter all stains used in each procedure
- Review accessions, obtain pathology report, and request slides for cases to be used at Tumor Board conferences
- Assist with preparation of presentation for Tumor Board
- Accession slides utilized in Tumor Board conferences when necessary
- Maintain records of Tumor Board slides requested, received, and returned
- External Consults – return all external consult material to the appropriate facilities.
- Mail/Documents – Keep a folder for all that need reviewed/signed by Dr Hanly. And distribute to appropriate departments.
- Quarterly AP Case Review TQM (tissue) Report to SGHS
- Quarterly Hospital Autopsy Report to SGHS
- Assist with autopsies with the following:
- Photography, recording tissue cassettes, blood tubes, etc.
- Coordinate and schedule autopsies with pathologists, diener, hospitals, and/or families
- Release provisional and final reports according to autopsy regulations
- Order toxicology and ethanol tests
- Retrieval of fetal demise from morgue for SEPA gross only examinations or autopsy
- Maintain autopsy records to include updating the autopsy logbook with required information, filing autopsy charts and slides once complete, archiving previous years’ charts, legal documentation, forwarding appropriate paperwork to billing department for invoicing, etc.
- Restock supplies
- Pre- and post-procedure cleanup
- Capture photos of specimens as needed
- Receive and process legal notifications from SGHS, Risk Analyst
- Other duties as assigned
