Job Summary
The specimen processor receives, sorts, and provides accurate data entry of specimens. This position ensures that once a specimen is entered into the LIS, it is then properly routed to the laboratory based on physicians' orders. The specimen processor follows the direction of the supervisor while taking initiative in performing and promoting quality and efficiency within the department.
Major Responsibilities
- Enter patient demographics into the computer system
- Preparation of labs, labels, and bottles for each patient
- Ensuring all required items are set up prior to the time of a procedure
- Assisting with collection of specimens and routing to the lab
- Submitting orders from client's EMR to LIS and accessioning of order once received by LIS
- Creation of manifests, packaging of specimens, and routing to courier
- Ordering and stocking formalin bottles, empty bottles for frozen sections, bags, culture swabs and other supplies
- Previewing pathology reports for accuracy. Printing, saving, and attaching reports in client's EMR system
- Keeping pathologist and administrative staff apprised of client's frozen schedule
- Assisting in resolution of billing errors
- Receive, log, sort and assign accession number and maintain identifying number
- Specimen entry, labeling specimens and slides and printing cassettes
- Scanning and verifying documents
- Assist with frozen section processing as needed
- Responsible for following established safety guidelines
- Promote supportive departmental communication with clients and employees
- Knowledge of acceptance and rejection of specimen
- Maintain a safe work environment
- Other duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED
- Previous data entry experience
- Medical background preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and laboratory values a plus
