Position Summary :

We seek a highly motivated individual who will lead the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies within the Laboratory and Genomic Medicine Division of the Department of Pathology and Immunology. The successful candidate will collaborate with basic science and clinical colleagues in Pathology and the broader community at Washington University and BJC Healthcare to enhance the utilization of AI, machine learning, and predictive analytics to improve the quality and efficiency of laboratory services and to advance the standard of laboratory practice through applied research and peer-reviewed publications. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Develop a strategy for responsibly implementing AI-empowered laboratory tests.
  • Contribute to infrastructure design, implementation, and maintenance for integrating advanced analytics into clinical laboratory workflows.
  • Develop and maintain a framework, protocols, and procedures for ensuring quality, fairness, and regulatory compliance for AI / ML applications in the clinical laboratory.
  • Interface with subject-matter experts and system leaders with shared responsibility for governance over clinical laboratory AI applications.
  • Design, execute, and publish cutting-edge applied research on healthcare AI.
  • Participate in pathology residency and clinical informatics fellowship education.
  • Attend and participate in the Pathology Informatics service, including directing daily rounds and contributing to completing informatics service tickets.
  • Additional clinical duties may be considered based on the candidate’s background and interests.

Education and Expectations :

The ideal candidate should possess M.D. or M.D. / Ph.D. degrees, board certification, or active candidate status for CP or AP / CP through the American Board of Pathology and be board-certified or board-eligible in Clinical Informatics. M.D. or M.D. / Ph.D. candidates with board certification in Clinical Informatics and a different medical subspecialty will also be considered. Ph.D. candidates with a degree in computer science or a related field and at least 5 years of experience working in healthcare will also be considered.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of delivering innovative biomedical informatics discoveries and applications using modern methodologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and applied data science. Prior experience developing and implementing AI solutions for healthcare applications is highly desirable. The applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude. Development of an extramurally funded research program is highly encouraged and supported.
