Description of Role:
In the Client Advisory department at Pathstone, we work on teams to manage investment portfolios for high-net-worth families and institutions. Each team is structured to have one or two Client Advisors who determine investment strategy and manager selection. The associates and senior associates work alongside the Client Advisors to produce performance reports and presentations, provide exceptional client service, and assist with building client portfolios.
In your work, you will learn about the financial markets, asset allocation, portfolio construction and various investment managers across a wide range of asset classes, including cash, fixed income, equities, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, and real assets. You may also participate in special projects, such as asset class deep dives, portfolio reviews, and spending analyses. In addition, you may help to coordinate complex estate-planning transactions such as transfers of interest, partnership distributions, and charitable gifting. You will learn to manage risk across client relationships by closely adhering to firm and regulatory policy, procedures, and processes.
You will provide high quality client service, with frequent interactions with clients, family office staff, tax advisers and investment managers.
We seek Client Advisory Senior Associates in our San Francisco and New York offices. This is expected to be a 3-year term and additional details will be provided in your offer letter.
Who We’re Looking For / Qualifications:
- Four Year Undergraduate or Graduate degree
- 2 years of experience in investment management, private client services and/or relevant operational experience
- Strong degree of familiarity with and interest in financial markets, portfolio management, relationship management, estate planning and investing principles
- Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to think critically and communicate in a concise, organized manner
- Highly effective problem solver with an ability to autonomously utilize firm resources to develop thoughtful solutions
- Ability to be flexible and execute processes with precision under pressure
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with varied audiences
- Strong management skills with a particular focus on effectively managing multiple client teams with varying levels of complexity in a deadline-oriented work environment
- High degree of comfort working in a flexible, collegial environment
- High client service orientation
- Strong interest in being a key contributor to the development of strong, long-term client relationships
- Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint is required
- Knowledge of Salesforce and Addepar is encouraged but not required
What You’ll Do / Job Responsibilities:
Client Team Management/Client Reporting
- Assist and collaborate with Client Advisory and Operations team members on client service and daily operational execution
- Become proficient in Addepar analysis and reporting views, generating client reporting materials and performing portfolio analyses
- Responsible for ensuring high level data accuracy of quarterly reports and presentations, monthly reports (as applicable) created via Addepar, Excel, PowerPoint or other systems
- Strong utilization of current systems and enthusiastic regarding adoption and implementation of process changes
- Serve as an accountable point of communication with clients on their reporting materials
- Act as "project manager" of client team; outline requests for junior team members and manage the process to completion. Provide appropriate context to all team members.
- Engage quickly with the Legal and Compliance team on all relevant requests and appropriately flags any potential concerns
Portfolio Management
- Monitor investment pipeline and liquidity provisions
- Confirm transaction execution plans with Client Advisor, attentive to matching exposures, liquidity, and planning for potential risk
- Respond to a wide variety of external and internal requests, including but not limited to: investment-related issues, wealth transfer planning, tax, compliance, estate and legal structural issues, and philanthropic planning.
Leadership and Mentorship
- Educate, train and closely manage Client Advisory Associates to ensure consistent reporting, investment and client relationship management practices.
- Provide routine and real time feedback directly to Client Advisory Associates. Takes an approach of working to coach, mentor, and develop colleagues
- Serve as consistent collaborator across client teams; actively provides status updates to client team, client and associated business groups at Pathstone; prioritizes in-person interactions for internal communication
- Engages senior team members as appropriate, seeking to provide a solutions-based approach, leadership including but not limited to in-person discussions, feedback delivery, and brainstorming sessions ("upwards management")
- Positively use influence to maximize the efforts of others towards the achievement of a goal or task
- Understand when and is willing to step in to assist junior team members on daily tasks, as needed
- Foster a work environment for Associates that supports curiosity and prioritizes understanding, promoting a shared team mentality
- Recognize the importance of diverse teams, opinions and objectives. Listens and actively works towards including different voices in decisions, inputs, and discussions
- Adapt management style to be effective with different Associates, Portfolio Managers and other colleagues
Pay Transparency:
Pathstone’s expected starting base compensation for the position as of the time of this posting is $120,000. The successful candidate(s) may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus award.
