Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate hospice volunteer services to provide the hospice care team with direct or indirect supplemental assistance. This includes recruiting, selecting, training, coordinating, and supervising volunteers; developing a quality program; quality assurance of volunteer services in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations; and coordination of volunteer services with Hospice staff. You will work in consult with the interdisciplinary group.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Stewards the philosophy/mission of PH Healthcare, which focuses on the overriding values of human dignity and respectful response to the needs of persons with life threatening/terminal and/or chronic illnesses.
· Serve as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) and attend meetings.
· Assume overall responsibility for the volunteer services program at the hospice.
· Actively recruit and retain volunteers from the community according to hospice policy and procedures.
· Select volunteers by interview and screening qualifications according to hospice policy and procedures.
· Maintain and implement a formal orientation and training course and routine in-services for volunteers according to hospice policy and procedures.
· Inform patient-care volunteers of any changes in patient and family situation that would affect volunteer care.
· Conduct volunteer need assessments as needed and make contacts and visits as needed to ensure quality volunteer care.
· Assign volunteers to provide direct or indirect services with consideration of individual preferences and ability and according to the patient’s plan of care.
· Supervise and guide volunteers in providing services.
· Ensure that documentation is obtained and complete according to policy.
· Evaluate periodically the performance of volunteers and program.
· Plan and provide annual recognition of volunteer services.
· Terminate services of volunteers if, in the hospice’s opinion, this action is in everyone’s best interest.
· Assist in developing, maintaining, and periodically updating electronic-based and/or paper-based assessments, other documentation forms, and tracking and filing systems for contacts required for volunteer services, in conjunction with IT support services.
· Actively participate in responding to audits with any needed plans of correction related to volunteer care.
· Make routine home and facility visits to monitor volunteer service and coordinate programs with facility staff
· Maintain volunteer personnel files with required documents.
Qualifications
A Bachelors' degree or experience as a Volunteer Coordinator or in Volunteer Services is preferred. A study emphasis in social work, psychology, counseling, marketing, or related field is preferred. A minimum of one year management experience dealing with data, people, program development, and/or marketing preferred. Experience in a hospice, healthcare, or similar setting preferred

· Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
· Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
· Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, physicians, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
· Must exhibit a high degree of integrity and discretion in carrying out work of a confidential nature.
· Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
· Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
· Must have effective computer skills for documentation purposes.
· Knowledge of compliance with HIPAA regulations.
· Understanding and commitment to Hospice and Palliative care philosophy.

Working Conditions
· Works in office area(s), the community, and long-term care facilities.
· Moves intermittently during working hours.
· Is subject to frequent interruptions.
· Is involved with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
· Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel, and visitors.
· Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
· Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
· Is involved in community/civic health matters/projects as appropriate.
· Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
· Is subject to injury from falls, etc., throughout the work day, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
· Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
