The Kennel Technician plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, clean, and structured environment for all dogs in the Patriot PAWS program. This position is responsible for the daily care, health monitoring, and overall well-being of the dogs housed at the facility. The Kennel Technician will also work closely with volunteers and assist the training team in reinforcing foundational cues for dogs in training.
This position requires a high level of attention to detail, compassion for animals, and the ability to work in a physically demanding environment. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare, teamwork, and the mission of Patriot PAWS.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Canine Care & Health Monitoring
- Walk dogs each morning and continuously monitor their health, behavior, and overall well-being
- Conduct weekly health checks, including weigh-ins, nail trims, ear cleanings, and collar adjustments, and record all findings in DogTracker.
- Ensure all kennels, toys, bowls, and bedding are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized daily to maintain a healthy and safe environment.
- Prepare food bags for dogs during their training, ensuring accurate portioning and dietary requirements are met.
- Bathe dogs as needed and provide additional grooming care when required.
- Immediately report any concerns to the Kennel Manager or Kennel Lead for prompt evaluation.
Facility Maintenance & Inventory Management
- Follow strict isolation procedures for sick or recovering dogs and maintain ISO kennels to prevent cross-contamination.
- Keep an organized and well-stocked inventory of essential kennel supplies, informing the Kennel Manager of inventory needs in a timely manner to prevent shortages.
- Ensure that all kennel and training areas are maintained according to Patriot PAWS standards, including outdoor play areas, runs, and indoor training spaces.
Training & Volunteer Support
- Work closely with the dog training team to maintain and reinforce foundational cues with dogs but not teach new commands.
- Monitor and assist volunteers, ensuring they follow Patriot PAWS methods and standards for proper dog handling and kennel maintenance.
- Be able to read and interpret dog body language, providing redirection and positive reinforcement as necessary.
- Be open to ongoing education and training to improve skills related to canine care and behavior
- Assist in the Puppy Development Center (PDC) as needed, supporting training staff and ensuring facility readiness.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- One year of experience in dog-related fields (kennels, grooming, pet training, veterinary care, or similar) is preferred.
- A strong passion for dogs and Veterans is a must.
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to observe and recognize changes in dog behavior and health.
- Strong understanding of dog body language and how to properly redirect behavior.
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and organization in a high-paced environment.
- Basic knowledge of canine health, nutrition, and behavioral needs.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.
- Frequent exposure to wet and/or humid conditions.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
- Occasional exposure to extreme heat or cold.
- Work environment may include loud noise levels from barking dogs.
- Frequent handling of cleaning chemicals used for kennel sanitation.
- Must be able to lift and carry more than 50 pounds. (e.g. dog food bags, supplies, and dogs if necessary).
