A government contracting salesperson identifies and pursues business opportunities with government agencies by selling products or services that meet their specific needs, navigating complex federal procurement processes, and building strong relationships with key decision-makers within the government to secure contracts, all while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and laws.

Key responsibilities:

  • Market research and lead generation:
Identifying potential government agencies and projects that align with the company's capabilities, researching their procurement needs, and generating qualified leads.

  • Relationship building:
Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with government buyers, contracting officers, and key decision-makers through networking, attending industry events, and regular communication.

  • Proposal development:
Creating comprehensive proposals that address government requirements, including technical specifications, pricing, and compliance details, while ensuring competitive advantage.

  • Contract negotiation:
Negotiating contract terms and conditions with government agencies, including price, delivery schedules, and performance metrics.

  • Compliance management:
Ensuring adherence to all government contracting regulations, including FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation), GSA (General Services Administration) schedules, and other applicable laws.

  • Competitive analysis:
Monitoring competitor activity in the government contracting market and identifying opportunities to differentiate the company's offerings.

  • Sales forecasting and reporting:
Tracking sales performance, identifying trends, and providing accurate sales forecasts to management.

  • Customer service and account management:
Managing existing government contracts, addressing customer concerns, and ensuring successful project delivery.

Required skills:

  • Deep understanding of government contracting procedures:
Extensive knowledge of the federal procurement process, including RFPs (Requests for Proposals), RFIs (Requests for Information), and the FAR.

  • Technical expertise:
Familiarity with the products or services being sold, including their technical specifications and applications relevant to government needs.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills:
Ability to effectively present complex technical information to government decision-makers.

  • Networking and relationship building abilities:
Building trust and rapport with government contacts to secure new business opportunities.

  • Negotiation skills:
Negotiating contract terms and conditions to achieve mutually beneficial agreements.

  • Compliance awareness:
Understanding and adhering to government contracting regulations and ethical standards.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, public policy, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in government sales or contracting, ideally within a specific industry sector.
  • Familiarity with government agency structures and procurement processes.
  • Microsoft Proficient
  • Grammatically Proficient
