Job Summary
The Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic at PAWS Chicago has been providing low-cost spay and neuter services, as well as vaccinations and other forms of wellness, to the public since 2000. This Clinic plays a crucial part in reducing pet overpopulation and homelessness in Chicago. The Surgical Prep Technician assists the Veterinarian during medical and surgical procedures, anesthetizes and intubates patients prior to surgery, monitors anesthesia, administers vaccines and dispenses medication as prescribed by the veterinarian. The Technician should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with teammates.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare animals for surgery. Calculate, draw up and administer medications. Shave, intubate and generally prepare animal for surgery as required by veterinarian including blood draws and IV catheter placement.
- Monitor animals under anesthesia, with a clear idea of abnormal conditions
- Ensure prompt and accurate paperwork is completed each day
- Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures
- Communicate effectively with clients utilizing excellent customer service
- Knowledge and ability to intake and release surgical patients
- Able to respond appropriately during an emergency, take directions from a veterinarian and direct others during the event, and maintain composure during CPR procedures
- Able to assist doctor with surgery using sterile procedure
- Able to perform all job functions of a veterinary assistant including clean, sterilize and prepare surgical instruments/materials as well as assist in the recovery of surgery patients
- Maintain records and manage controlled and non-controlled medications
- Maintain clean work areas including animal holding areas
- Other duties as assigned by management
Qualifications
Requirements
- Preference will be given to applicants who are certified (CVT) in the state of Illinois
- Required that candidates have a minimum of 3 years technician experience
- Must be professional, organized, and possess the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
- Must be able to work standing for up to 10 hours as well as lift up to 40 pounds
Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $18-23 (commensurate with experience and qualifications)
