Animal Care Team Member

PAWS & More is a nonprofit animal shelter that serves Washington County and surrounding areas of Iowa. “PAWS” stands for “Providing Animals With Shelter” and the “ More” part of our name refers to our many initiatives that seek to better the lives of the animals and people that we serve. We are searching for our next great shelter employee! A day in the life of this important person will begin at 8:00 am with deep cleaning our shelter from top to bottom. Scooping poop, sweeping, hosing, sanitizing, and litter box cleaning are your daily duties. You’ll feed our canine and feline friends. It takes a lot of cleaning to keep our shelter fresh and safe and to minimize the spread of disease. Walking dogs is a big part of the job too! We get our canine friends on the grass multiple times a day. They are strong so you’ll want to be too. We will train our new employee to conduct feline and canine assessments, process and intake surrendered pets and stray animals. You’ll also be trained in basic medical evaluation procedures including vaccination and providing medication and screening tests. You’ll use the computer often to input and receive information using shelter software and email systems.

Important note: Weekends and holidays are required. We care for animals 365 days a year, whether or not we are open to the public. You won’t work all holidays, but you can expect to spend some Christmases, Easters, and July 4th holidays with the animals (and your coworkers.) That’s Shelter life!

You’ll speak with the public throughout the day, process owner surrendered animals when they come into our shelter, care for them while they’re with us, help reunite them with their families, and process their adoptions before sending them off to their forever homes. Each day is different and we are always busy.

A vital part of this role is that you’ll be part of an after hours on-call rotation. When on call, you’ll travel to pick up animals for transport to the shelter and/or assist law enforcement.
