ADULT EDUCATION TEACHER – ESL PROGRAM
Daytime and evening teachers needed for Beginner, Intermediate and High Intermediate levels
Duties: The Adult Education Teacher works as part of a team to deliver curriculum based upon competencies
necessary to learn English and acquire skills necessary to navigate a variety of service systems, including health
care, education, employment, and finance. This job requires the candidate to be skillful at making participants
comfortable with participating in the program and being part of the class. The teacher must work with students so
they are able to speak, listen, read and write in English as quickly as possible. The overall goal of the program is to
provide new immigrants, low-income, unemployed, and/or low-skilled clients with learning opportunities to help
them succeed in job training, enter the workforce and/or access mainstream employment services to provide
economic stability for themselves and their families.
The Instructor will develop weekly lesson plans for acquiring English language and to improve academic skill
proficiencies. Teachers must use a variety of materials and teaching strategies including authentic materials In
addition to traditional course work, teachers also provide lessons for their students on topics such as goal setting
and job readiness and regularly assess and communicate with students, referral sources and others (as appropriate)
about progress in the program. S/he will integrate digital literacy into the curriculum and uses other instructional
modalities to advance individual learning goals. The teacher will schedule both group and individual instructional
time to accommodate needs and schedules of program participants. Timely completion of all student/program
related documentation, reports and paperwork is essential along with the proven ability to perform duties with
minimal supervision.
The teacher must maintain proper, updated, student records, motivate students to stay in school and maintain
attendance levels (including regular emails, phone calls, etc.). Teachers must have excellent interpersonal and
presentation skills and be able to quickly establish a rapport with students and be able to balance holding them
accountable while providing them with support and encouragement. S/he will maintain confidentiality of client
information, processes and data which could be damaging if not properly safeguarded.
The instructor will have the ability to work with a diverse group of people. S/he will have working knowledge of
current practices in adult education. The candidate will also have the ability to research, assemble and analyze data
as well as organize and present workshops and public presentations. Finally, this teacher will have the ability to
work harmoniously with other agency personnel.
Requirements: Experience in teaching and/or working with adults in an educational setting is a must. A
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required, a degree in education is strongly preferred. Teachers must be
knowledgeable and comfortable teaching a multilingual, multicultural population and be able to utilize a variety of
strategies to reach all learners. Teachers must have effective verbal and written communication skills, work
effectively independently as well as a member of a team and be organized and prepared for all classes. Must have
excellent follow through skills, be outgoing and able to establish and maintain relationships with participants,
employers, case management staff, etc. Teachers must also commit to participating in professional development
sessions. The successful candidate should be comfortable teaching either in-person, fully remote or a hybrid to
maximize options for student engagement.
All positions are part time – up to 19 hours per week including paid prep time for the daytime program and 7 hours
per week including prep for the evening program.
Hourly Rate: $24/hour.

About the organization: The overall goal of the Pawtucket Adult Education Program is to help students
increase their basic literacy, numeracy, English language acquisition, workforce preparation skills, and
occupational skills so they can live, work and function successfully in society. Specific goals include
assisting them to attain high school credentials; transition to postsecondary education and training; earn
industry-recognized credentials; and/or, obtain employment/retain employment. Approximately 75% of
our students are English Language Learners. The program offers daytime and evening classes and is a
program of the Pawtucket School Department’s Child Opportunity Zone (COZ).
