Part Time
The Pawtucket COZ is looking for someone to work with elementary students in an afterschool setting as
part of the Pawtucket COZ 21 st CCLC afterschool and summer programs. This individual will provide a
fun, safe, enriching, high-quality program that gives children/youth opportunities to learn new skills,
make new friends and develop pride in their abilities as part of the 21 st Century Community Learning
Center (21 CCLC) programs. This position welcomes certified teachers, paraprofessionals, and/or
community members with experience working with children and youth. The successful candidate will
generate an enrichment activity complete with lesson plans that reflect inquiry based learning resulting in
a project or new skill.
The afterschool programs run at the elementary schools in 3 nine week “sessions” Monday through
Thursday. The hours range from 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day beginning at 2:30 PM until 5:30 PM
(dependent on school dismissal times which vary). There is a 20 hour paid professional development
requirement to be met throughout the school year; COZ hosts several trainings that the successful
candidate(s) may be required to attend
Essential Functions:
● Have a written lesson plan for each class with learning objectives, team building opportunity,
description of the activity planned, and materials needed and final reflection. Lesson plans will
include all areas of program quality: safe environment, supportive environment, children
interacting with materials and ideas, and reflection.
● Maintain contact with site coordinator to discuss participant attendance, progress, and special
events.
● Check in with staff before youth arrive, organize materials for class activity, take attendance,
ensure that the space is left clean at the end of class.
● Facilitate classes that demonstrate a high level of student engagement in learning new skills while
visibly showing that they are enjoying the activity.
● Attend an orientation before program begins.
● As necessary, confer with parents on children’s behavior and recommends methods of dealing
with the individual concerns
● Handle emergencies should they occur
● Performs other duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator, Program Manager, or COZ Director
Required Background:
● High school diploma or equivalent with some college preferred
● At least two (2) years’ experience working with children and families in a multi-cultural setting
● Detail oriented
● Understanding of school culture
● Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
● Ability to resolve problems in a timely manner
● Must be confidential with respect to information about staff, students, and families
● The ideal candidate must have a desire to work with elementary age children. Experience and
training in youth development preferred
● Bi-lingual is a plus
Physical Environment/Working conditions/Physical Demands:
● The work environment is typically within a school setting
● The working conditions (light, noise level, temperature, etc, are typical of (primarily) a school setting.
● The employee must be able to set up/take down cafeteria tables and occasionally lift and/or move
objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
About the organization: The Pawtucket School Department’s Child Opportunity Zone (COZ) is a full-
service community school initiative designed to support children and their families. Major programs
include after school, summer and family engagement activities for elementary aged students and adult
education English, GED and job training classes for adults. Outreach, case management and addressing
basic needs are an integral part of all programs.

Hourly Rate: $20/per hour
