Social Worker for MLL (Bilingual)
Supports MLL students with behavioral, mental, emotional or physical problems; counsels students whose behavior, school progress or mental or physical disability or condition indicates need for assistance. Consults with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine causes of problems and effective solutions. Arranges for medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures. Attempts to alter attitudes and behavior of parents and teachers that cause or aggravate problems.. Serves as liaison between home, school and community resources, protective services, doctors, and clergy members. Serves as a consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations which are not referred for district service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Proper course placement - placing MLL students in the appropriate classes to meet their individual needs can increase school success
- Connecting MLL students with clubs and extra-curricular activities
- Pairing MLL students with a student representative, preferably one who is fluent in their native language, to acclimate them to the school.
- Ensuring that MLL students are appropriately identified for special education services.
- Ensuring that MLL students who are identified for special education services are also provided English language supports.
- Organizing small groups to foster positive school adjustment for MLL students
- Ensure that MLL families are receiving translated materials in their native language
- Participate in the development of individualized behavioral program for MLL students base on their unique special needs;
- Consult with parents, teachers and other school personnel to determine causes of problems and effect solutions;
- Provides individual group, and family counseling to MLL students and their families who are determined to be in need of such services;
- Arranges for medical, psychiatric and other examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures;
- Recommends changes in educational / behavioral program or other treatment to effect remedy;
- Participates in meetings such as : Response to Intervention (RTI), Section 504 / ADA and Special Education evaluation / IEP meetings when scheduled for MLL students;
- Serves as a liaison between school and community resources, such a family service agencies, child guidance clinics, protective services such as DCYF, and doctors;
- Consult with school personnel with respect to students or situations which are not referred to the social worker for direct service;
- Maintains records necessary for the performance of responsibilities;
- Have knowledge of the level systems in place for the MLL student and be able to assist students in graduating to higher levels;
- Performs social assessments and adaptive behavior skills assessment to determine MLL student's needs;
- Performs crisis intervention with MLL student, school personnel, and family on a needed basis;
- May be required to conduct home visit with parents (guardians) to review and discuss student's needs and recommendations established;
- Perform such other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director or Building Principal.
