I. Position Title: Lifeguard
II. Summary of Overall Purpose of Position: Under supervision of the Pool Manager and head lifeguard, performs a variety of pool-side and water safety duties as needed to assure safe us of pool facilities. Monitors water activities to assure safety and prevent accident or injury to patrons. Enforces pool and facility rules and regulations.
Duties
- Supervises swimmers in the pool and on decks. Oversees patron's swimming ability and provides monitoring.
- Enforces rules and regulations of the pools.
- Reports safety issues and hazards to appropriate personnel.
- Provides first aid, CPR, and assistance in and out of water as necessary; handles emergencies as required.
- Prepares records, accident report, and other administrative paperwork.
- Maintains pool area, cleans decks and cleans drains. Removes all unnecessary equipment from the pool areas, locker rooms, first said station; monitors safety and cleanliness in all wet areas.
- Maintains clean environment; performs janitorial duties as required or assigned to include body fluid cleanup sanitizing area and light housekeeping.
Marginal Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned.
III. Qualifications
Experience: Must be at least 15 years of age. Licenses/Certifications: Must be Red Cross certified as a lifeguard. Must be Red Cross certified in first aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. For those not yet certified the City will offer training for those that do not have their certifications yet. Candidates may apply and if selected will need certification. Candidates may participate in the certification training offered by Payson City or may complete certification training from other sources.
Special Requirements: Must be able to pass a Payson City Pool prepared swim test.
Knowledge of: The principles and methods used in lifesaving including modern method of approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people; standard techniques of resuscitation and other first aid measures; swimming pool sanitary regulations and their use; and the rules and regulations governing the conduct of people at a swimming pool or swimming area.
Ability to: Demonstrate advanced swimming skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, and demonstrate good judgment and decision making.
Skill in: Skill in strong swimming and lifesaving.
Communication Skills: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Tool, Machine, Equipment Operation: Rescue equipment, communication equipment to communicate with the public and other lifeguards, medical equipment, etc.
Working Conditions
Physical Demands: Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performance of daily tasks. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity needed in performance of essential duties. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and creative problem solving. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions: OSHA related hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, pool mechanical systems. The employee occasionally is exposed to west and dry conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens. The noise level is moderately loud in the facility. The employee may be exposed to stressful situations as a result of human behavior.
