Overview

This role provides policy and program planning consultations to coworkers and management officials in the Department and the interagency. Develops program implementation goals and milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in regular and ad hoc meetings within the Department and the U.S. interagency,
  • and afterwards composes and clears formal, detailed summaries of these meetings.
  • Drafts and formulates guidance, talking points, Congressional reports, and other materials for use by posts and bureaus in the policy process. Develops background information, and approaches for presenting policy positions in interagency fora.
  • Coordinates tasking from working groups, develops summaries/evaluations of options, and forges consensus on recommended actions. Represents the Afghanistan Desk in Department-wide and interagency discussions and events.
  • Participates in meetings with agencies of other governments and multilateral organizations to contribute detailed analyses and assessments of alternatives to decision makers.
  • Reviews NATO documents on Afghanistan and drafts or edits guidance for U.S. interventions in NATO meetings on Afghanistan as needed.
  • Maintains relationships with other Department bureaus and the Department of Defense to facilitate information sharing, collaboration, and joint planning on regional and national security issues.
  • Perform regular office duties required of all team members, including early morning notes duty on rotation, drafting daily informational and action items for the leadership of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA), and compiling other informational items conveyed to post on a nightly basis.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited college or university in international law, international relations, political science, economics, history, sociology, geography, social or cultural anthropology, law, statistics, or in the humanities; OR
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited college or university that included a combination of courses, with at least 24 semester hours in international law and international relations, political science, economics, history, sociology, geography, social or cultural anthropology, law, statistics, or in the humanities; OR
  • Have 12 semester hours in one of the above disciplines and 12 semester hours in statistics / quantitative methods. OR
  • Completed at least 4 years of appropriate experience in one OR more of the fields listed above in work associated with international organizations, problems, or other aspects of foreign affairs.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years or more work experience on fragile states, such as on Afghanistan or states in Central Asia or South Asia, with focus on political-military issues, political transitions, conflict prevention, political risk assessment, or similar areas.
  • Experience providing advice to senior policy officials in the United States or elsewhere, or to senior decision makers within an international organization or non-governmental organization, on complex political and social issues.
  • Familiarity with U.S. military structure and organization and/or multilateral institutions such as NATO engaged in issues of international security.
  • Ability to solve problems and encourage consistent, solid performance.
  • English language (written and spoken) communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, coordinate activities in multiple locations, act decisively in daily work, and work well in a multi-cultural team environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently to assess priorities and manage daily coordination of details with minimal supervision


Pay Range

USD $121,722.62 - USD $121,722.62 /Yr.
