What are the responsibilities and job description for the WELDING ENGINEER position at PDS?
Tasks :
Develop, analyze, and apply material properties and design allowables, processes and quality engineering specifications for welding applications specific to aerospace welding
Provide material analyses including failure analysis, life predictions, definition and requirement specifications of both weld tooling and welded flight hardware assemblies.
Review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures specific to welding operations
Provide production oversite through firm understanding complex machinery and develop weld schedules / programs catered for that machinery
Review weld data to determine trends and / or out of family weld telemetry and weld quality to foster weld system health and operations related to production welding and weld rework / repairs
Provide weld engineering support with welding aluminum alloys and stainless steel with varying thicknesses in one or more of the following areas : friction stir welding (FSW), resistance spot welding (RSW), resistance seam welding (RSEW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), orbital tube welding (OTW), and laser welding
Provide practical experience with weld system programming and weld system troubleshooting
Knowledge of military and industry process specifications, applications and standards as related to welding and manufacturing operations
Communication skills (verbal and written) including requirements documentation and presentations
Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project)
Ability to work at elevated heights and small spaces.
Deliverables
Provide support to multiple welding processes within an Aerospace Production environment
Develop and qualify welding schedules, support / evaluate weld mechanical testing and metallurgical inspection, support weld tool design, implement weld process improvements and cost reduction initiatives
Review visual inspections, dye penetrant inspection, ultra sonic inspection and x-ray inspection discrepancies to prepare dispositions for nonconforming hardware rework / repair instructions to resolve welding defects
Coordinate with engineering and production operations personnel to develop and communicate non-conformance repair procedures and implement related corrective actions
Develop on the Job training packages (OJT) and certifications required to perform welding on flight hardware
Train and certify technicians in friction stir welding (FSW), resistance spot welding (RSW), variable polarity plasma arc welding (VPPAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), orbital tube welding (OTW), and laser welding
Interaction with other internal organizational groups, such as : Facilities, Tooling, Production, Design Engineering, Equipment Contractors, and others to ensure a strong cohesive business rhythm
Troubleshooting problems and arriving at a solution in a timely manner
Attention to details and good documentation of observations / findings
Knowledge of reading blueprints and ability to interpret blueprints to others
Weekly project status reports

Drawings, specifications, and other key documents needed to execute the work scope.
Part manufacturing process descriptions, operational work instructions and routers, BOMs, ERP system, Quality data management system, etc.
