Job Description
Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher as well as the Director, the Assistant Teacher will support the Lead Teacher in planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate and stimulating program for children (depending on classroom assignment) 8 weeks - 5 years. The Assistant Teacher will provide an opportunity for students to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual, and psychological growth. All duties and job functions are performed following the philosophy and standards of Peachtree Road Lutheran Preschool in conjunction with the state guidelines for Early Childhood Programs.
Qualifications
· A minimum of a CDA or Associate Degree in ECE or related field and one year of experience working with young children (preferred).
· Current certification in infant/child CPR and first aid or completion of certification of both within 90 days after the first day of employment.
· Ability to maintain visual supervision of the group of children at all times in the classroom, outside, or in other settings.
· Knowledge in child development and early education theories and practices.
· Ability to lift, carry and hold children up to 35 pounds.
· Possesses strong oral and written communication skills.
· Accepts responsibility and is self-motivated.
· Demonstrates teaching skill and effective time management.
· Must be a team player.
· Shows compassion, understanding, and a genuine love for children.
· Must pass a background check as required by BFTS.
Job Responsibilities
As a Co-Facilitator of Learning
a. Assist the Lead Teacher in planning lessons and activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of the children in the program.
b. Make sure children are supervised at all times.
c. Help develop culturally appropriate programs and activities.
d. Make sure that classroom rules are followed.
e. Work to maintain a clean, orderly classroom.
f. Provide a clean, safe environment for the children while the program is in session.
g. Assist the Lead Teacher to follow the school's provided class schedule.
h. Assist in supervising children in the preschool.
i. Utilize naptime to help children rest if necessary and/or to accomplish work within the classroom if children are resting comfortably.
j. Assist in establishing routines and provide POSITIVE guidance.
k. Comfort children and build their self-esteem.
l. Communicate in a manner that the children understand.
m. Help observe children and make a note of progress.
n. Perform duties related to Peachtree Road Lutheran Preschool as deemed necessary by the Lead Teacher and Director.
With Parents and Other Members of the School
a. Communicate effectively and appropriately with the Parents and other people involved in the preschool setting, if asked by the Lead Teacher, regarding program expectations, activities and child's progress.
b. Communicate all relevant and appropriate information regarding general issues or concerns with the Lead Teacher and then the Director before going to the Parents or the Board.
For Professional Growth
a. Continue professional development through in-service training and/or continued education - minimum 10 hours per year as required by BFTS.
Time Requirements
This position will require 40 working hours per week plus training days, occasional family nights, fundraising activities and staff events or meetings.
Additional events may or may not be paid.
Evaluation
The effectiveness of this position will be measured through the Director's observations of job duties, communication, and a formal competency evaluation. Results of mid-year and end-of-the-year-surveys of parents will also be taken into consideration when evaluating the teacher.
Working conditions
Physical/Mental/Emotional Demands
As a Teacher, you may be lifting and carrying children or equipment as well as sitting on the floor or on child-size furniture.
You will be expected to keep the classroom and all the materials/manipulatives/toys clean at all times. Trash must be thrown out at the end of the day and windows must be shut. Tables must be wiped clean at the end of the day.
A Teacher will at one point or another come into contact with children who are ill and/or contagious and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff and themselves.
Smells associated with toileting and children who are ill are also to be expected. The environment carries with it a lot of "creative" noise as well. Sometimes, there will be a lot of things happening at once and as a Teacher, you must ensure that children are supervised at all times. Preparation to handle accidents or emergencies at any time is also required.
