Job Summary:
The registered nurse in our allergy department plays a crucial role in providing specialized nursing care to patients with allergies under the guidance of our ENT specialists.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Allergy Assessment and Testing:
a. Conduct comprehensive allergy assessments for patients.
b. Administer and interpret allergy tests to identify specific allergens including skin prick testing and blood draws for allergy testing.
2. Immunotherapy Preparation:
a. Calculate and mix patient-specific immunotherapy serum for administration.
b. Use nursing and clinical judgment in formula advancement while demonstrating aseptic technique while mixing.
3. Immunotherapy Administration:
a. Administer allergy immunotherapy injections.
b. Monitor patients for any adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, and provide appropriate interventions.
c. Direct patients’ immunotherapy schedules and adjust dosing as needed.
4. Patient Education:
a. Educate patients on allergy management strategies.
b. Provide guidance on lifestyle modifications to minimize exposure to allergens.
5. Collaboration with ENT Specialists:
a. Work closely with ENT physicians to develop and implement individualized allergy treatment plans.
b. Communicate patient progress and collaborate on adjustments to treatment protocols.
6. Documentation and Record Keeping:
a. Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
b. Document allergy testing results, treatment plans, and patient responses.
7. Patient Support:
a. Offer emotional support and address patient concerns related to allergy management.
b. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
8. Clinic Functionality:
a. Organize and direct a nurse-run clinic with duties including but not limited to: patient scheduling, taking payments, coordination with other departments, clerical filing, taking phone calls, cleaning and organizing the workspace, and patient billing.
b. Call labs and perform insurance verifications to direct and coordinate patient care.
9. Compliance and Safety:
- Complete all required compliance and safety training.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Follow infection control protocols and maintain a safe clinical environment.
- Assist with quality assurance and regulatory compliance activities.
- Follow all regulatory, payer, and ethical standards.
10. Qualifications:
a. Holds a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Utah.
b. Previous experience in allergy nursing or related fields.
c. Strong knowledge of allergy testing techniques and immunotherapy administration.
d. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
e. Ability to work collaboratively in a healthcare team environment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and ENT-specific instruments.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Proficiency in typing with a minimum words per minute of 50.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction.
