GENERAL PURPOSE: The Assistant Director of Nursing provides leadership and oversight for the nursing department, ensuring high-quality, person-centered patient care. This role supports the Director of Nursing (DON) and Medical Providers, contributes to a collaborative work environment, and upholds Peaks Recovery Centers (PRC) mission by integrating compassionate care with strong clinical and administrative practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Director of Nursing provides leadership and oversight for the nursing team at Peaks Recovery Centers, ensuring high-quality, compassionate care in a behavioral health setting. This role supports clinical operations, staff development, and interdisciplinary collaboration to maintain efficiency and compliance with all medical and regulatory standards. A licensed nurse with strong clinical skills, leadership experience, and a passion for working with patients suffering from mental health and/or substance use disorders.
LEADERSHIP & ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
- Supervise and support all nursing personnel.
- Assist the DON in hiring, training, and performance evaluation of nursing and behavioral health tech team members.
- Develop and implement short- and long-term departmental goals.
- Coordinate detox admissions and nursing workflows.
- Collaborate with medical, clinical, and operational teams to ensure efficient patient care delivery.
- Maintain and manage the nursing supply budget.
- Respond promptly to nursing-related concerns and ensure timely resolution.
- Develop and update nursing policies and core competencies.
- Monitor and audit nursing documentation, including patient contact notes.
- Maintains patient charts/documentation according to the standards outlined in Clinical Records Management Policy & Procedure and the Assessment, Treatment Planning, DAP Progress Notes Discharge and Aftercare Planning Policy & Procedures, and the Medication Management & Self-Administration Policy & procedures of PRC.
DIRECT PATIENT CARE
- Complete initial patient and continuous assessments using standardized screening tools (e.g., PHQ-9, CIWA, COWS, etc.).
- Obtain patient medical histories and review recent physical exams for admissions.
- Perform daily vital signs and withdrawal assessments for residential patients.
- Administration of patient medications according to the Seven Rights of Medication Administration and in alignment with the Medication Management & Administration SOP.
- Monitor and document patient responses to medications and report concerns.
- Triage patient medical needs and coordinate appropriate level of care or referral.
- Conduct admission assessments and provide psychoeducation related to substance use.
- Provide emotional support and facilitate support groups as needed.
- Lead therapeutic groups alongside a Primary Clinician and document all clinical services per policy.
TEAM COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION
- Partner with internal departments and external providers to coordinate care.
- Work closely with the Medical Providers to manage patient treatment plans.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, supervision, and trainings.
- Collaborates with and refers to other human service agencies within the community to coordinate patient care plans.
CENTER-WIDE ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for keeping client information confidential by adhering to Colorado law, HIPAA, and PRC policies and procedures.
- Responsible for compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws; professional practice acts and ethical guidelines; policies and procedures of PRC; and contractual guidelines.
- Responsible for supporting PRC Mission, Vision, and Purpose by practicing and modeling a culture of wellness within a One Team Mindset.
- Completes all clients records in Kipu, PRC electronic clinical records, as requested/required.
- Completes required competency training and additional training as requested or selected by supervisor.
- Reviews and acknowledges PRC policies and procedures as requested/required.
MISC. DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
- Support community outreach and educational efforts as assigned.
- Remain flexible to perform additional duties as needed.

Education or Formal Training:
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is required.
- Masters in Nursing preferred, but not required.
- Current and maintained Registered Nurse license with DORA.
- Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification of BLS Certification.
- 1-2 years experience in behavioral health and/or addiction is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
- Possesses a working knowledge of individual, group, family, and crisis treatment approaches and their application to patients with emotional, behavioral, and substance use disorder problems.
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of nursing skills.
- Has the ability to produce written documentation and/or electronic records of medical work in a manner readily understood by other service providers and in a manner that meets federal, state, and PRC documentation requirements.
- Ability to summarize service themes from a variety of patient contacts and communicate suggested improvements for service delivery.
- Ability to assess the level of risk and make appropriate medical judgment for resolution of client emergencies to effect a safe outcome.
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
- Ability to enter data on PRC computerized record keeping system, Kipu.
- Some knowledge of psychotropic medications and medical information relevant to mental disorders.
- Ability to understand and utilize collaborative documentation when clinically justified and as requested by the client.
- Ability to interact with people in a professional, friendly manner.
