A global leader in renewing and modernizing machines for heavy industry is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to join their team. This organization specializes in electric rotating machinery, condition-based monitoring, control systems, and advanced automation for some of the most complex and large-scale industrial applications in the world.
This role is essential in ensuring that the company's autonomous products meet As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) safety standards and comply with both local and international functional safety regulations. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in functional safety, incident investigation, and system-level risk management.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate risk assessment workshops for new or updated industrial automation products, including assessments initiated by change management protocols.
- Define functional safety requirements and ensure they are documented in product validation checklists.
- Identify and establish safety controls required to maintain minimal risk levels across autonomous solutions.
- Conduct periodic audits of automation systems to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards.
- Recommend improvements to the organization’s Safety Management System (SMS) and Management of Change (MoC) processes.
- Review and track outcomes from previous risk assessments, validating that actions and requirements have been fully addressed.
- Lead investigations into safety incidents in the field, and update functional safety documentation as needed.
- Drive and oversee the implementation of safety bulletins, ensuring that all corrective actions are validated.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of standards such as ISO 13849, IEC 61508/62061, and ISO 12100
- Experience working in mining, heavy equipment, autonomous systems, or similar industrial sectors
- Background in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering
- Strong interpersonal and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Demonstrated ability to investigate incidents, identify root causes, and manage risk proactively
