Pediatric Specialists of Virginia's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders clinic, located in Falls Church, VA is presently seeking a Phlebotomist to provide coverage to the lab. M - F 8:30am - 5:00pm

The hematologists and oncologists of Pediatric Specialists of Virginia’s (PSV) Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders care for children and their families across the full lifespan of treating these disorders, from initial diagnosis to comprehensive treatments and recovery.
There are only a few pediatric cancer and blood disorder programs in the country that offer specialized expertise in the childhood forms of these diseases that PSV does. Our team of specialists develop an integrated care plan for each family that allows them to visit one location and access all the services they need. This makes us a true medical home for children undergoing treatment for cancer and blood disorders in Northern Virginia.
Perform tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provides patient services and administrative support in laboratory operations. Interacts with parents, patients, physicians and other staff under moderate supervision in a courteous manner. Provides assistance to other employees within their department as well as other departments. Responsible for collecting, receiving and processing specimens, checking for proper and complete patient information, patient registration, and performing other related services and clerical duties. Train employees and others in the duties described in job description.
Job Description
Process specimens:
- Processes specimens by centrifugation, aliquoting and sorting into specific test areas and for storage.
- Coordinates the pickup and delivery of specimens for specific areas of the laboratory. Troubleshoots specimen processing procedures.
- Greets, registers, and schedules patients.
- Greets patients and parents in a courteous and consumer-oriented manner, checks patient into scheduling system and or updates computer system information.
- Reviews patient insurance information for accuracy, collects demographic and insurance information, checks/corrects face sheet.
- Verifies the insurance information is complete prior to procedure and collects and verifies preauthorization/referral information.
- Completes computer-aided, on-line registration with parent/guardian via telephone or in person in a courteous and consumer oriented manner.
Problem solving:
- Investigates and handles improperly labeled specimens, requisition problems and inadequate specimens.
Computer entry:
- Enters patient information, test requests, cancellations and additions into computer order program.
- Performs computer searches for data inquiries and prints and retrieves reports.
- Checks test requisitions for completeness.
- Requests additional forms or documents from referring physician as necessary.
- Contacts referring physician to confirm questionable test requests.
- Attaches label to test requisition and place in appropriate location for specimen collection.
Maintenance:
- Maintains simple laboratory equipment and notifies technician/technologist of unresolved problems.
- Orders routine inventory and supply requests.
- Distributes forms/letters/mail/lab results.
- Maintains Lab Customer Service Desk files.
- Copies, faxes and distributes documents.
Phlebotomy:
- Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary method.
- Performs special procedures such as collection of specimens for sweat chloride test and administration of xylose.
- Conducts assigned routine laboratory tests such as urine dipstick, loading automated analyzers, preparation of slides for microscopic analysis.
- Sets up simple bacterial/viral cultures and enters specific test results into the computer
Miscellaneous:

Minimum Qualifications Required
- HS diploma or equivalent.
- 2 to 3 years of related experience in an accredited clinical laboratory.
- Experience performing lab computer tasks and scheduling.
- LIS (Laboratory Information System) computer experience preferred.
- Math Ability Level: Basic calculations.
- Ability to work with detailed procedures.
