Job Description:
- The end client is looking for an experienced and motivated Engineering/Estimating Manager to be part of their dynamic team.
- As an Engineering/Estimating Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that every project is accurately estimated, efficiently engineered, and effectively executed.
- You’ll be at the forefront of driving the success and growth of our projects, working closely with internal teams and clients to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and Inspire: Manage a team of engineers and estimators to provide accurate cost estimates and engineering solutions for projects in a variety of industries.
- Estimate with Precision: Develop and review project estimates, ensuring that all aspects are covered, including labour, materials, and time, while ensuring alignment with project requirements and specifications.
- Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with project managers, procurement, and design teams to align project estimates with operational capabilities and client expectations.
- Technical Oversight: Oversee the development of technical drawings, specifications, and product designs, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project requirements.
- Cost Control: Monitor project costs throughout the lifecycle, ensuring that all cost estimates remain within budget, while identifying areas for potential savings.
- Continuous Improvement: Evaluate and improve estimation processes, leveraging past data, and refining methodologies to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Client Interaction: Serve as a technical liaison with clients, providing expert insight into project scopes, designs, and costs.
- Risk Mitigation: Assess risks related to project cost, schedule, and scope and take proactive steps to minimize impact.
Detailed Duties:
Manufacturing Engineering:
- Oversee 2 onsite Manufacturing Engineers. The team may grow or contract as needed with your input.
- Oversee 2 remote Manufacturing Engineers in BOM/Routing/Critical Dimensions/Shop Drawing generation/Programming, etc.
- Deploy your team (or yourself) live to attend to "at risk" Over Estimate jobs BEFORE they become Over Estimates. Operators and their Supervisors will call ECRS on jobs where Operator disputes the Run Time and a Manufacturing Engineer needs to come to the work cell/Production floor in a timely fashion before work is started to either adjust time in ERP (to help plan for scheduling impacts) or decline the request and reassign work, come up with a better Manufacturing plan to stay within the estimated Run Time or "ding" the operator.
Estimating/Sales Engineering:
- Oversee 2 Estimators/Sales Engineers in quoting and closing <$10k sized deals (Sales Engineering/Estimating team currently follows up/works to win Quotes <$10k and Sales/Biz Dev our General Manager works on >$10k). One onsite and 1 remote.
Weekly Meetings to Lead:
Manufacturing Engineering:
- “Engineering Planning Update” each business day to push through any SOs that are ready for Engineering release to the shop.
- “Contract Review Meetings” 3x each week to review any Contracts that may break the end-client's normal Terms & Conditions.
- “Final Write” meetings are held each business day to check on the profitability/manufacturability of jobs ready to be released to the floor.
Estimating/Sales Engineering:
- Attend meetings with that team at least 2x a week to make sure we’re on schedule with Open Quotes/Quotes that have expired past the Estimated Close Date.
Main Software Used:
- Paperless Parts (Quoting/Routing/BOM, etc.)
- Fulcrum Pro (ERP)
- Sales mate (CRM), where you will get Estimate/Quote Opportunities sent to your team.
Continuous Improvement:
The end client is open to exploring your ideas. Some initial ones include:
- Attend our weekly Continuous Improvement meetings and help modernize functions and make progress each week. Focus will be on Estimating/Engineering Continuous Improvements
- Train Manufacturing Engineering on best practices to help avoid ECRs/NCRs (i.e., Point out Critical Dimensions on drawings better)
- Add additional Routing steps into current and future jobs that better align our ERP with the "actual" of the floor (i.e., Material Handling of large items)
- Help our Machining Department with "Preloading programs into machines to avoid programming issues"
- Create a better process for Punching Machine Programs to be sent directly to the machines vs. programmed at the machines
- Help our Press Brake department to be able to receive programs from the office/Manufacturing Engineering Dept
- Standardizing and calling out Jigs/tooling in our ERP
- Evaluate any customers with a repeat pattern of losing jobs/recommend price increases
- Help modernize equipment within our yearly Maintenance budget
- Paperless Parts: Quoting Complex Assemblies
CORE KPIs:
Engineering:
- Daily Revenue Released: Aim for fully clearing out all Active SOs that are ready to be released each day
- Reduce Daily ECR, Job Over Estimate, and Engineering/Estimating Related NCR: Counts to 5 max (accomplish this within 3 months max), and the goal is 1 a day max (accomplish this within 3 months max).
- Active ECRs: Must be addressed within 24 hrs max for non-Over Estimate Issues and within 30 minutes for Over Estimate
Estimating:
- Gross Margin: keep average GAAP Gross Margin >33%. The end-client has quote approval levels for total Job Revenue and Gross Margins. Estimator/Sales Engineer -> Estimating/Manufacturing Manager -> General Manager. Do not release/accept work with negative or below standard Gross Margins without General Manager approval.
- Daily Quotes on schedule: Ensure that we have minimal late quotes and no quote sites later than 2 business days past the latest date the customer will accept.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Experience: 5 years of experience in engineering or estimating management, ideally within the sheet metal, fabrication, or manufacturing sectors.
- Strong Estimation Skills: Proficiency in estimating tools, including cost analysis, labor and material forecasting, and bid preparation.
- Technical Expertise: In-depth understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and project lifecycle management.
- Detail-Oriented: Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications with accuracy.
- Team Leadership: Proven ability to lead and mentor teams, ensuring quality output and high morale.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with both internal teams and external clients.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for identifying and resolving potential issues before they arise.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of engineering software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Project Management: Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies is a plus.
- Industry Knowledge: Experience with industry standards and regulations within manufacturing and fabrication is highly desirable.
